I only have experience of our valver, which to be honest ain't too bad on a run although they are very revvy due to the gearing, like 4k revs at 80. Round town again if you're not mashing the pedal all the time they are OK.
You're probably into 1.3 or maybe 1.6 driver territory so should be better still.
sure these are RWD

Put it into perspective Max. It's your first car. I had a rotten old MG Metro for my first car. Rear ended at about 15mph killed it.
First cars are meant to be shit.
Start thinking about it in the medium to long term. This turd has to last you what, 12 months? 2 years tops. A few things will happen in that time. You'll get your no claims, you'll more than likely be earning more money too. So a better car will be within reach.
It's the same with my £400 touring. It's a proper turd, but I've learned loads. Just been working on the heap now. I'm currently studying, This time next year, my money should have doubled, I'll buy a better touring. The old gal only has to keep me going for another 12 months. That's how I see it. No point spending uber dollar making it beat scoobies (an M42 conversion
) or resprays, trick interiors etc etc. I just want it to run well, be serviceable and learn mechanics from it.
I still have to treat a rotten jacking point (neighbour will weld for me, legend), sort bushes and track rod ends out, fix a puncture, replace a spot which the glass fell out of, replace a wrong size tyre and sort an issue with it hesitating at about 3k revs. That's before I replace both wings, bonnet, four doors and the tailgate! Oh and probably the windscreen too.
Damn right you get beat by a gay little Micra, it needs to be quick so the owner doesn't get seen in it. I trust it was a yoof and not a pensioner harking back to his childhood?
You may well find something a little quicker, but 85% or more of the family saloons and rep mobile smokers will still be leagues quicker.
You don't need to win traffic light GP's to make up for short falls and insecurities in personality. You have friends, family, a bird and your dream job. I'm 30 and don't know what my dream job would be.
Next time a Micra or other text book jelly mould hatch wants a race, let it go. Why bother? Amble on home and not let the possibility of crashing/being pulled over detain you from getting to your bird and giving her a right plowing.
In the grand scheme of things, you can spunk endless thousands trying to beat everyone, but it doesn't really matter. You wont get knighted for it, you wont pull birds because of it and putting it on your CV will not get you a better job.
Keep the faith, you more than most should understand the trials and tribulations of e30 ownership!
If I don't get round to the cosmetic stuff, who gives a f*ck. I have a nasty touring with a rebuilt head and a lens

Rosco - That's made a lot of sense. Only time will tell about how I feel about my E30. I do love E30's, just losing the love for this one. Who knows what I want? Even I don't know what I want TBH.
As for the exhaust, it ain't going to make any difference towards power on a M40.

hey maxfield, if you want some advice just drive with what makes you happy dude, petrol prices are only going to get higher and higher so drive that e30 petrol guzzler now while it is what it is because in 5years aint nobody gonna be happy filling up there cars even if it is 1.0l nugget or 2.5l bmw etc, if the car shits you sell it but if you enjoy the drive just be HAPPY mate.
my e30 is now infront of my house awaiting her fate cause a just bought myself a holden calais with a ls1 in it. im a knob that drives a 5.7L v8 and im only 20years old. i had a insurance company qoute me $8,500 for a year of full cover insurance. luckily there are company's who specialise in young drivers with v8, turbos etc in australia and i pay $2,100 a year until i earn some no claim bonus's. the point im trying to make is i pay out the ass for insurance, cost me $100 to fill up every tank and im a apprentice mechanic so i earn shit all cash but when i drive her she puts a smile on my face every time so i dont complain.
if you like your e30, by the parts she needs, get her running smooth and give that car a cut and polish so that she sparkles like its straight off a bmw lot and you will not be sorry. mine was a lemon when i bought her but almost 3 years later and some late nights at my workshop i still love to drive my e30

Some would say they didn't. Higher compression isn't always best but on a 20year old engine they do tend to be 'tighter' than later lowcomp M20s

Jamie,
Look at it like this, You are 17 and drive a BMW. Now to most people of your age it doesn't matter what model of BMW it is as it still has that "prestige" when talking in the pub (or youth club in your case
)
Think how the micra owner feels when he gets chatting to a young lass "Yeah alright, I'll pick you up about 8. I'll be in the micra". Oh how he must fell such a man
Stick with it dude, It's got the potential to be a very nice car with minor amounts of work.

Stick with it, get all the issues sorted, and when insurance allows get a 6 pot in there, preferably with 24 valves
Insurance company do list the 318i & 318is sepeartaley.
It's the idiots on the phones that don't listen properley and quote you for a 318i. This then becomes their problem as all conversations are recorded and as long as you said "is" they have to honour it ! as i found out

Not suprised, my Micra is faster off the mark than than my 325i.
They have a very restrictive exhaust system with 2 cats, add a sports manifold decat pipe and one of those off the shelf chips and 100bhp is yours, not alot on paper but consider the 850kg Weight, 2nd gear does about 60mph at 7000rpm.
