Just buy a 316/318 with the best 2dr shell you can find and put a better engine in when you can afford the ins.

I know what you mean, I was the same when I was your age. no matter what anyone said i wanted a ridiculously big engined car. At 18 (just after passing my test) I bought a 3.6 ltr Jag Sovereign and but it under my mums name with me as a second driver. It was just over £1000.

At 20 I did the same (mum first driver but didnt use her NCB as she had it on another car) on a 90 325 touring and it was about £1000 too. Now I'm 21 on my second 325 touring and first driver and its just under £700.

My brother decided he wanted to insure his 93 1.4 Polo GT with him at first driver. cost him £2500 with Adrian Flux inc audio cover, lowered and wheels.

Thing to do is use your parents and buy yourself the best E30 you can. Thats what its all about!

Personally I think a 318i is a great car to start with, you got the looks and they are still fairly rapid. I've had a 318i , 320i and now a 325i and I found the 318i to be a much better car to drive than the 320i.

With the 318i ( or an IS ) you could spent time making it look the part and it will still be able to be most fast and the furious wanna be's that like Halford parts. Also I personally think the 318i engines are brilliant and will be plenty enough for a younger driver to play with.

This is what's known as "fronting" and is highly illegal. Should any insurer believe you are doing it, both you and your parents' policies are revoked, and if you are on the road at the time or, worse, part of an accident scene, the resulting "driving without valid insurance" charge WILL lead to heavy fines and has possibilty of prison time for serious abuse. Couple that with the massive hike in your subsequent insurance quotes for the rest of your life (you have to declare any previous bans or offences on insurance applications) and it's JUST NOT WORTH IT.

im 21 and my insurance on my e30 325i is £550 TPFT.

Did you know you can transfer your motorbike/moped no claims over to your car :D.

Try direct line, I did, I went from paying £1137 on a shitty fiesta 1.1l to £700 on my bmw for the first year. bmw having 1500cc more then the firsta yet close to £500 cheaper.

It pays to know guys in the trade who can advise.

This is a cool and cheap way of doing it.

Enjoy

i believe all that but how would they know that your parents don't use it most of the time? The whole point of a second driver named on the insurance is so that in the time of an accident and the second driver is driving, the car is insured.

So what you are saying is that a second driver, named, could be done for driving without insurance? I think not... unless the insurers can prove that fronting is in action. How could they prove that?

I'd really like to know

Think the operative word here is " thinking", doubt insurance company would have to prove anything.

The insurance just have to present a believeable argument that you're defrauding them in order to invalidate your policy. If, for example, you're at university 200miles from home, using the car, and you have an accident, then there's no way on earth your Mum is the main driver. If you t-bone someone as you leave your 9-5 job, then there's no way your Dad is the main driver. And primarily, if your parents have policies on other cars where they accrue 10,000 miles annually, there's not really a plausible way that they're also the main driver on your car as well.

They don't have to provide proof (you know, recorded conversations of you saying you're going to defraud them), they'll just say you broke your terms and conditions and if it goes to court, you certainly won't win.

Drifting from the point, he knows he gonna have to bend over and touch his toes when he gets insurance as all young drivers seem to.

Also with petrol costing so much a 318i would also make sense to keep running costs down for you.

So would any other performance mods that would make any sort of real difference. Get the car, learn to drive safely and in a controlled manner, and when you can afford the insurance for a faster car, go mental.
Good point!!! Just put up with it mate. I had a mini 1000 as my first car. I used to keep up with loads of faster cars lol. Get some experince before you go too big. Use this time also to gain some mechanical skills then drop in a 2.5 in place of the 1.6... If you stuff it, go home and put the 1.6 in before the insurance come to see the car!!!

Not 100% honest i know but welcome to the real world... Ins screws you so work it to your advantage!

Spend the rest on beer, a gym and forget about fast cars for a while. Contrary to the image Max Power etc try and pedal, cars dont get you laid. Gym's and beer get you laid. At 17 you need to get your priorities straight and it's all about 16 year old girls.......

(disclaimer: I'm 26 now so obviously I've moved onto 19 year old girls........)
Ive never been to the gym (probably because i feel worse after exercise than before lol!) Forget the gym and spend the extra cash on more beer and curry!!! lol

I was with CIS when I first started driving, was a nice policy as I could let anyone drive the car on it but they stopped that unfortunately.

So you'd pay for the insurance despite it being completely void and fraudulent? good move.
The reason for the stupid insurance premiums these days? People like you. Whoever you hit will be left paying out as you are not insured.

If you get hurt, the car will be recovered and in a storage yard. Also, if it's a heavy smash, you won't just be able to pull the lump out and swap it in a morning.

A 2.5 is also way too fast for a new driver.

technically if you get Third Party Only, and you don't tell the insurers about an engine conversion there aren't many problems - if you crash into someone, the other person will get paid but you won't, your car won't even be inspected. Unless you have a massive body kit and blatant mods then you should be alright

However if someone crashes into you, the best thing to do is go through a standard insurance claim centre as you will have voided your current insurance due to the car being modified but by going through a 3rd party insurer you are covered as there is no contract between you and them stating whether your car is modified or not

If you get Third Party Fire & Theft then you better hope your car doesn't get nicked as if it gets recovered, the car will be inspected

Aside from engine conversions, if you mod the car with factory options such as 15" BBS, M tech Body Kit, Sports Leather, you should also be covered as you can claim that the car was ordered from the factory like that and all of the equipment came originally with the car

OK here is another tip for you that i learned about recently. My brother in law is 18 and has just passed his driving test. I gave hime a 1996 astra 1.4 LS that i had taken in part exchange. I considered it to be worth about £500. When he started to ring around for insurance, he was being quoted anything from £1500 - £3000 for 3rd party Fire and theft. Then a friend of mine told me about a little loop hole. He told me to ask the insurance companies for a quote with a £1000 excess. The price came right down to £700. And here is the theory of why this is a good idea. What I did not realise is that you ONLY have to pay the excess if you have your own car repaired. So if (when) he has an accident that is his fault he will decline to have his car repaired and simply buy another car for £500. If it is the other guys fault the claim will be on the other guys insurance anyway. Basically what I am saying is that if the car is worth less than £1000 you simply throw the car away and buy another one if you have an accident that is definately your fault. Hopefully of course you will not have an accident and just save a pile of money on your furst yearsinsurance.

Anoither thing that I found was that if you do an online qoute and use exactly the same details for a male / female the female quotes are approx 30% cheaper. Have you considered vaginoplasty?
