E30 325I vs E90 320I - traffic light "dual"

Hi Guys,
I had a bit of a "dual" with a new bmw, a e90 320i.....
I have a e30 325i... the 325i appears to be quicker...

anyone have similiar "race" experiences?

and please, dont anyone tell me something like... obviously.. its a 2.0 vs a 2.5...difference is
the newer 2.0's push out almost similiar power to oldskool 2.5's...

When pulling away in first, and revving the crap out of the 325i, i sometimes cant "find" 2nd gear.. is this normal? seems to be only when revving over say 5000rpm before changing to 2nd...

who else have "dropped" a new 3series 320 in their oldskool 325i's ?

yeah sure! ok keep in mind my 325i is stock standard... i've also grown up a bit.. not wanting to race evey 2nd car on the road...

I mean at the end of the day its rarely accurate... as a one car can have a 0-100km/0-60mph of 8s and another a 0 - 100 of 9s.. all it takes is the faster 8s car to change from first to second 500ms slower that the slower car and again 500ms slower from 2nd to 3rd for them to both appear to be even.

but nonetheless... it was 3:30am... i was HOT-FOOTING home from a great house party... and this new beemer was behind me.. could nt really keep up.. then at the next robot... he seemed to be game for a "dual" as i would say... I pulled 1.5car lengths ahead just in 1st alone.. but then i couldnt find 2nd...till i dropped the revs.. dunno i must test it.. but like i said whenever i seem to rev it in 1st over 5000rpm before changing i cant seem to "find" 2nd. i can drive. been driving for 10years about...

Recently E90 320i's have been upped to 170 bhp, the same as in the 320is special edition.
Still wouldn't expect one to bother an e30 325i though, what what with the extra weight and less torque.

thats not the case at all but bigger engined lighter car beats heavier smaller engined car isnt really much of a headline

The reason the OP can't find 2nd is down to being tense and trying too hard to change gear more quickly.

My dad's E92 320d barge pisses all over my E30 320i in a straight line.

But he cant keep up in the twisty's.

Although, in the wet, ain't traction control a wonderful invention? Definitely evens the playing field.

Youre forgetting something...lol, its might be 320i vs 325i.. but remember the 320i is new generation engine, pushing 170hp!! thats 5hp less that the 325i. 5hp is hardly less powerful.

Gear changes: I'd suspect a worn/slow synchromesh...2nd is particularly susceptible and would show the symptoms indicated...

Invalidates your insurance, dontcha know!
But I would expect 170bhp in a lighter E30 (1250Kg) to be faster all round than 170bhp in an E90 shell (1500+kg)
However, it is all a bit academic...Acceleration is determined by a combination of gear ratios, power and weight...

my best e30 dual - standard 200bhp m3 driving down slip road something pulls in behind me travelling quickly lights on so cant make out what it is,onto dual carraigeway and i floor it shit its coming past me,silver subaru impreza wagen with huge exhaust an import with its square number plate,i catch up under braking at the next roundabout and we exit together scooby slowly pulls away up to about 120 then amazingly i start to pull him in,im on his tail and hes not for for pulling over,through a couple of bends flat out and the signal of defeat is there as he signals and pulls over i look down as i pass him and speedo is showing close on 250kph! amazing,great laugh and m3 gains my respect for ever.lets hear your best races win or lose .

Last time I enjoyed a few twisties at speed in the vallies I was merrily sliding the arse round a few corners and roundabouts, booting the throttle on the exit and enjoying 6 cylinders scream as I swiftly accelerated to more than legal speeds and suddenly a scooby shot up my arse, came out of no where and was keeping up with me pushing me hard up my arse in the corners and letting me gain room on the straights (I say letting me!), seemed like he was trying to push me to go faster. Had a brown pants moment braking hard for a roundabout thanks to brake fade and lots of it, but made it and booted the throttle again on the exit. I hit XXmph in a 60mph limit and a set of blue lights came on in the grill of the scooby,

I litterally pooped myself, heart racing, stomach in my mouth kind of thing, wild notions of out running the copper were swiftly discounted because I wouldn't do that, and I didn't have a chance. Decided to hold my hands up and admit speeding but deny anything else. I slowed down, indicated to pull over and the cheeky bastard pulled along side gave me the thumbs up and booted the throttle. He left me for dust.

Found him parked up more than a couple of miles up the road in a supermarket car park getting his lunch. Sods law you can drive those roads and not see anyone for hours some times and the one car that wants to play with me is a copper with me between him and lunch.

I spent 4 years living in the vallies (and 8 in wales generally), its alot more easy going there than anywhere else, for instance it was normal for people to drive home from the local pissed as farts simply because the only thing you could hit on the way home was the bottom of a ditch. And if you crashed you simply came down the folloing morning with a tractor and pulled the car out.

Having said that the 'local' as I call it was in the middle of nowhere and it certainly wasn't walking distance home for anyone.

I wouldn't dream of driving like that in Bournemouth though, far too busy far too much traffic and far too much 5-0.

My best race (at Snetterton)...
1986 (IIRC) Super Road Saloons...

I used to campaign a Hillman Hunter GLS Holbay against a field of Golf GTis, Minis, Rover SD1s, Escort and Cortina Lotus'...

It was wet..very wet...

I had qualified (in the damp) around 16th....my usual sort of slot.

The race was different...It was apparant that I had a bit of an advantage in having a lower power/weight ratio...by the end of the first lap I was leading and the only other person to be even close (like on my bumper) was a Fiesta XR2...

We raced away from the rest and I eventually came second(just) after a very hairy last lap moment at the bombhole...
It was a nice feeling beating all the more modern and more exotic machinery...

Brands Hatch Indy...
I was campagning a BMW 2002Ti (replica) in the BMWCC series (now called the Kumhos)...

After a recent suspension upgrade (to coilovers with high rate springs) I found an extra 1.5 secs per lap in practice compared with the previous race at the circuit 6 weeks prior...
With that, I qualified 4th behind 2 E30 M3s one an ex group A touring car and a 325 ex group N car...

one of the M3s failed to start (damaged engine) which left me with a clear track in front from the grid...by Druids on the first lap I was 2nd...held that for a few laps but was hit (quite hard) from behind by another M3 that had started behind me which allowed both him and the 325 through...I finished 4th, though, ahead of loads of M3s, 325s, M5s, M635s, etc...

I dont know if its like this over there, but years ago, overhere you would get a odd friends "lets go" from someone... you would beat him.. or even he might beat you.. and he would throw his hazards...as in... thanks for the run... or might slack off and chirp "what u runnin"... or
"good run".. or so.. in a sportsmanship way...

nowadays.... u get many of these dickheads that have typically had waaaay to much brandy and coke.... that wanna race... but they cant let their ego's go.. even after u have won they come at u..doing stupid things...life risking things...like driving on the ridge of the road to try and pass you on the left or suchlike... its just here where i apply brakes and decide..something like.. 'its all fun and games till someone loses an eye"...

i generally wont have a serious run if i know ive had a few pints... so i generally take it easy then... wise... not that its right to be "racing" on the road in the first place...

but lets face it... a friendy bout now and then...us men will always be competitive and give a go

Must look up some stats for the 120d & 330d (& numerous 5ers etc) - is there something about drivers of new diesel (& it does seem to be the diesel ones mainly) BMWs that means they feel the need to prove something?!

i generally wont have a serious run if i know ive had a few pints... so i generally take it easy then... wise... not that its right to be "racing" on the road in the first place...

well not a few pints... a few beers... say 3 or 4 or 5 x 340ml..

from what i do understand..that in the UK its just generally NOT DONE.. very strict traffic there..

here they are strict.. if u are over the limit beyond a certain point u get arrested. its just
the logistics..there arent enought traffic cops.. so mostly cameras get used...

i think cape town is a relatively big city...

It was...Alex Elliot built motor with mostly Schnitzer bits, Alpina front brakes, Leda front coilovers and Apex rears on Spax...
Plastic windows, replica turbo bodykit and plastic boot and bonnet...weighed ~750Kg with me inside!

It was a regular top 8 finisher...

Well, back many years ago (when I was a lot less wise ;) ) we (my brother and I) had a mini...I spotted a stage 3 8-port head going for pennies in Motoring news, so we bought that and put a wild Kent cam on a short stoke 1098 bottom end...
Ran on a single weber 45DCOE...Other than a clubman front end (for the disc brakes) everything else was standard...

My friend (female) worked for a company where she had a E28 528i as a company car...But her boss had an M535i, but hated it...so Jacqui had the M535 to drive...We used to "race" along the road to my place 5 miles outside of Basingstoke...On that drive my mini could outpace the 535...It wasn't so fast on the starights, but round the (many) roundabouts the mini was king!

Lakenheath to Ely (long straights, hairpins, ditches either side, terrible road surface as it all sinks into the Fens). I was in a Citroen ZX diesel 70BHP and totally kept up with (never passed!) a US import Corvette (lot of them around those parts what with the USAF being there.)

The US barge flew off on the straights of course, the Citroen (same chassis as a 306 - brand new tyres - cornered on rails,) reeled him totally back in on every corner. Great run. We parted at the T junction with me still snapping at his heels. He must have had 4 times the BHP. Would have been to get past though
