I think mine is likely to fail on minor bodywork ( havent checked jacking points ....hmmm ) but I have receipts for flexi and metal brakepipes done last year so should be OK, steering & suspension all feels good and all lights/wipers etc work as they should. Fingers crossed - I suppose once its been through the test I'll really know what I'm up against !wackiacki wrote:hi there guys,im an zone newby but also a current mot tester, anything i could help you guys out with just ask ill try me best!! done my own 325 tourer not so long ago, went down on the usual, brake pipes and rotten front jacking points.

Just been out in the garage and poked around the jacking points - all seems very solid .... no nasty crunching noises when prodding with a screwdriver anyway. MOT time always stressful - Im sure it will throw some sort of nasty at me!
as far as bodywork goes any excessive corrosion within 30cm of a load bearing point,ie seat belt or suspension mounting point, will fail the mot,but theres almost 500 indervidual items checked average per test.you can get your mot done 1 calender month before its due and the computerised system will automaticly add the extra month to your new ticket.just make sure the garage gives a free re-test,most do within 14 days (ten working days) of the test date. remember though that even though you may have a valid mot certificate,it is illigal to knowingly drive a defective vehicle, and vosa's computer shares everything with the p.n.c.

Don't know whether that little hole would be classed as "excessive" - I know it needs sorting though. I had to have the battery tray welded on my old 320i but don't think it failed the MOT on it and it was a bigger hole than that and about the same distance from the suspension mount. All will be revealed Saturday !wackiacki wrote:as far as bodywork goes any excessive corrosion within 30cm of a load bearing point,ie seat belt or suspension mounting point, will fail the mot,but theres almost 500 indervidual items checked average per test.you can get your mot done 1 calender month before its due and the computerised system will automaticly add the extra month to your new ticket.just make sure the garage gives a free re-test,most do within 14 days (ten working days) of the test date. remember though that even though you may have a valid mot certificate,it is illigal to knowingly drive a defective vehicle, and vosa's computer shares everything with the p.n.c.

should fail, yes, just depends if you know the tester or notwackiacki wrote:by the looks of the picture that hole is within 30cm of the suspension turret and should fail if so,but it only appears small and should be fairly inexpensive to get welded up,fingers crossed theres nothing else!!! good luck bud!
you may know the tester but he might not be letting on if hes letting you get away with anything or not.very easy to get led into a false sence of security,if your a bit slow aaaaiiiiiiiiii!!!!stevotheevo wrote:should fail, yes, just depends if you know the tester or notwackiacki wrote:by the looks of the picture that hole is within 30cm of the suspension turret and should fail if so,but it only appears small and should be fairly inexpensive to get welded up,fingers crossed theres nothing else!!! good luck bud!

I bought a 318is of fleabay for £300 last november. The owner was getting rid cos he said it hadnt been on the road for a year, and wouldnt pass an MOT. I bought it for sh*ts and giggles, and cos it was cheap. Took it for an MOT the next day and it passed, even though, the exhaust was blowing, speedo didnt work, leaked oil, leaked coolant, leaked fuel, corroded fuel lines and corroded brake lines. Only got an advisory for the brake lines. Happy days. This car is now my daily driver.

in all seriousness, the amount of welding its had i reckon any rally driver would be proud
seing as you drive like one sounds like a good idea!! from what ive seen its mighty impressive and nice to see someone spending the time to make their bimma safe and sound.some others seem to be happy driving around a cheap sh**er that potentially dangerous to the rest of us,either lack of talent or brains,im betting on both.
Hope that wasnt directed at me! Car now has new engine and gearbox, new fuel lines and everything works. Yay!some others seem to be happy driving around a cheap sh**er that potentially dangerous to the rest of us,either lack of talent or brains
sorry fella, dident meen to distress, but im sure my statement applys to alot of peole we all know.sounds like a work in progress, any pics?n1tr0_9 wrote:Hope that wasnt directed at me! As bought

Work in progress

Found this wedged in cylinder head at Cy 4 inlet port!

And now

Plus it now has a lower mileage engine and box, a quick shift, lightened flywheel and 325 clutch, k&n panel filter, Jetex exhaust, evolve chip, and ive repaired most of the damaged interior.

Well done mate, good feeling isn't it! Mine passed the other week as well. I say passed it did need a new indicator bulb, so left me out of pocket.......not
, was well happy with the result. First MOT since owning the car, so hopefully a sign of things to come. (we can all dream :p)

bet your glad your not in my area.. my tourer was no where near as bad as that and they ripped it to bits. my old 323 went in with a fuel leak and i got told it had to leave on a recovery truckn1tr0_9 wrote:I bought a 318is of fleabay for £300 last november. Don't know how much you can get it repaired for but def within 30cm of susp point and therefore a fail item.capri_rob wrote:only bit I am now concerned about :

Had a good poke about with a screwdriver and suprisingly its very solid around that little rusty bit. I am half tempted to put a big nut and bolt in it with big washers both sides and say its where the alarm used to be......or would that be too much of a bodgehennabm wrote:Don't know how much you can get it repaired for but def within 30cm of susp point and therefore a fail item.capri_rob wrote:only bit I am now concerned about :

Worse things have been done than that. It would buy you time to think on what to do with it.
