Until reading this and coming to the conclusion that 99% of the ones saying they are going to run something won't i wasn't going to bother but i do like a challenge so may get my finger out and get something finsihed in timemarch109 wrote:Spadge are you not bringing anything special? I would rather just give Fuzzy's YB beast a little tweak and then a 6k side step clutch launch on a pair of sticky drag rear tyres though

Dude even if I have to run a standard 2.5 and sleep in it on the treck back home I'll be there. I also have a half finished 2.7 here (ie. never to be!) and a 2.8 and/or 2.9 strokers waiting for pistons. Its just finding the time to get everthing done.SPADGE wrote:Until reading this and coming to the conclusion that 99% of the ones saying they are going to run something won't i wasn't going to bother but i do like a challenge so may get my finger out and get something finsihed in timemarch109 wrote:Spadge are you not bringing anything special? Having a blow-up won't make you popular though.
I remember popping a turbo oil drain on one of my Cossies at Shakespear raceway a few years back. It took them an hour and a half to clean the track whilst everyone huffed and puffed and just as they were about to open the track again the heavens opened for the rest of the day
Needless to say i wasn't a popular chap

Now this thread is really getting me fired up about getting my M30 engine turbocharged.
I've seen a lot of comments on here asking what Toby Unna is / has been doing with his 335i Turbo.
Many of you may have seen in the for sale section that he broke the car up for parts.
Well, guess who bought all of his turbo / Megasquirt gear / exhaust / intercooler etc. ...?
Work has already started on my original M30 engine (I'm running my standard spare engine at the moment) and I'm planning lower compression, more boost, plus my already ported cylinder head and inlet manifold. I'm aiming for a minimum of 350bhp and it WILL be done by september!
I'll probably break something but it's worth a go!

For info - the usual rule in any class of motorsport is that a forced induction engine is classified as having 1.7x its displacement. So for example a YB is classed as displacing 3.4l, a M20b25 with a turbo would be classed as 4.25l...
Also of note, diesels have a 0.5 multiplication factor so a 324d would be classed as displacing 1.2l.
Just a thought.

So only people ho've done a dyno run with current setup and weighed their car can run, doubt we would get many takers.hoshy wrote:As I already mentioned. What's wrong with power to weight ??
The system we have now is as even as its going to get, its biased towards BMW engines which is good because e drive E30's and its simple.
Also as theres only 6 catagories its not the end of the world if only a few people turn up!

I reckon most cars can be estimated within 20bhp and if your brackets are spaced 40bhp apart, no problem. S'pose it's a lot of brackets between 316 power and karan mtech power though
Weight shouldn't be too hard to estimate either. Nearest 100kg would server the purpose.

I doubt a turbo/sc/stroker conversion could be guessed to within that sort of accuracy, depends on all sorts of factors. And as you say between a lowly 316 and even bootys 500bhp cab would be 10 classes apart, thats far too many.
The system we have now also doesn't fall foul of bullshit either, a quick glance in the engine bay would reveal what class your in, an engine swap, turbo or sc would be blatently obvious. Most people can identify the e30 engines by glance too. Regardless of what owner/v5 or badge on the rear says.
The only engine which wouldn't fit is a 3.1L M20 stroker but since the crank from a S52 or M54 with custom pistons is required for one of those I doubt we will have one running on the zone by september.
It needs to be simple and the system we have is simple.

ok i did mean to post this last night but my net went down.......
may i make a small change.
A) Under 2000cc Period Engines (316, 318, 318is and 320)
B) standard m20 and tuned sub 2.0l under 200 hp (m10 turbos ect)
C) turbo/stroked m20. standard m30 and m5* and standard m3 (under 300hp)
D1) unlimited. sub 300hp (cossie transplants, 200-300 hp turbo 4 pots, and tuned M3s. also any thing that doesnt fit the previous)
D2) unlimited. above 300hp (S engined cars, big power turbos, v12s and 3.5 turbos. basicaly anything goes if its in an e30)
think doing that levels the playing field a bit, iv also done it so that if a car dosent quite fit with the catagorys it can be bumped up one.
eg a 325 turbo with 400hp would be in D2 which would put it against similar cars
a 180hp tuned 318is would be against standard 325s.
a 250hp turbo m20 would be against 220ish m50s
fuzzys cossie would be in D1 against 270hp m3s
trying to be as fair as possible with this one and it also takes it down to 5 catagorys with one over all prize. also with the unlimited catagorys any one who wants to run with the bigger cars can as its only split by hp

but then you are relying on the honesty of owners declaring their correct bhp. theres a lot at stake and i wouldnt trust most of the dodgy fookers on here
and mine will be well over 300bhp by then
but why is mine getting singled out so much? theres far more powerful transplants on here than mine?

A stoked N/A M20 will never make turbo m20 power. Strokers need not turn up really.
Standard M20's will never be able to compete with a turbo or SC 318is.
Also allows for a lot of bullshitting about power figures to get in a lower power bracket for a beter chance to win.

thats true although a stroked m20 an m30 and a m3 should be fairly damn close in a streight line. and most bigger power m20turbos will be over the 300hp limit. i should think a 250hp turbo and a 220hp 2.8 will be quite close.
and the under 200hp on the m20 and sub 2 liter turbo was so that any more powerful engines would be in a higher class.
