E30 Zone

Ok ive finally found somewhere that is able to reproduce the fine spline that the power steering racks use.
Plan is to produce a solid steel round bar with fine spline on each end, notched for a pinch bolt to pass through and prevent removal while the bolt is still fitted. These will also be turned down to a nice diameter in between the splined ends.
You will have to obtain a pair of E34 type UJ's and rebuild one half with the column half of your E30 linkage to enable a correct fit onto the column.
I can do this if you supply the UJ's

The first lot will be made for an E36/E46 rack fitted in the rear holes of the cross member as this is what im using, if anybody using an E30 PAS rack is interested all I would need is a measurement

Estimated price is to be in the region of £50 - £60 to your door

I need at least 8 names/deposits before I can talk proper sizes/amounts/costs and get a more accurate price.

Like this but with no welded alloy which can cause possible MOT problems

hmm, could allow an E36 rack with an M30 maybe?

joining this band of scummers.. why i'm not sure.

Forgive my ignorance, but does this replace the metal/rubber "guibo"? or is this further down the steering assembly?

Yep does away with it and gives more space

As Dafs says it replaces the existing linkage, what you are buying is a steel shaft with splines on each end, you will need two E34 type UJ's to connect it to the rack and column.

I will get a drawing done and drop it into the machinists Monday

will using this enable a standard m50 and m52 exhaust manifold to be fitted with no modifications to the manifold

As you can see in the picture above the rear manifold will just about go on with my welded link and you can still use the standard flange connection, the front one however will need the flange cutting off as it interferes with the steering rack, I just made a sliding joint as you can see in this picture



I suppose you could keep the front flange if you wanted, would just mean a bit of cutting/bending etc

im taking the plunge and trying one on mine so i can let you know before you start fannying around, itll be a pain in the arse to fit only to find it wont do the job as that btb covers the steering joint but ill do mine when the engine comes out to make way for the 2.8 at last.

I have a Z3 rack (which I'm assuming is the same), and a spare UJ linkage, but off an E36. Is that different to the E34?

Finally, is this just for that rod, then you split up the spare UJ and attach that to either side of the new rod?

If so, interested so I can remove that rubber bit. Also have a BTB3, but would like added saftey

so thats what the finished article will look like??

Drawing is in as of Wednesday, waiting on a final price before work starts and a test piece

Finished article will be very similar, slimmer in the centre of the shaft for a start

Looks great, could be very interested when the next group buy comes around!

When is that going to be as i would like one to if it will work with my BTB2 and an E36/E46/Z3 rack?
