M50 turbo looking to ask a few questions

I've decided to make an m50 turbo after first thinking it 5 years ago now..

400 maybe 450 is my target figure. My e30 felt lively enough with 300 and supercharged.

So engine - I'm looking to non vanos m50, arp's, decompression plate, oil housing from a vanos engine thus able to use the oil feed to feed the turbo?

Looking at holset hx35 turbo. Only thing is, the ones I've found are internal wastegate (I know the penny could be welded up and an external be used), but do they do an external version?

Spoke to gunni about management and I think vems is the one being plug and play so that's good.

I'm just confused about things like the wastegate what one to buy,
Where can I get a manifold for rhd car?

As far as my car is concerned it's ready for turbocharging. .

Being already 24v and was supercharged, I have e36 325 gearbox, e30 m3 prop and lsd, brakes are covered by Mazda rx7 4 pot callipers Corrado g60 discs ect..
Suspension is sorted with bc coilovers, adjustable top mounts, E46 rear top mounts, m3 eccentric wishbone bushes 99 percent poly bushed ect ect

It's got solid steering linkage which would make it easier atleast for manifold or downpipe...

Oh also I have sump and pick up already so that's good. Just need it drilled and taped for oil return?

If anyone has a build thread that doesn't mind sharing I would be grateful as I can do some reading while I parts gather

Thank you
Ant

im in the middle of repairing my shell ready for m52 turbo, and looking for the same info, most of the ones im finding are US builds. i have been tempted try the millar war chip for managment but i dont know if anyone maps them over here. What price is a vems setup going for?
I have emailed Elite developments and they say that their e36 manifold will fit an e30, they also sell a downpipe to go with it which i would have thought would fit too
I see you are also from south wales, i live in the brecon beacons area

I would just use the internal waste gate (actuator) if you can achieve enough boost from it? You can manually bleed it or ECU it to control your boost. If not then take it off, weld the tab and run an external one. Tial make very good westgates. I only have experience with Garrett and Kkk chargers, but both of these you can buy modified internal actuators for to run more boost.

Found this for RHD cars http://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/191685385662

I keep having mad thoughts about turboing too. I'd keep the supercharger (which I still haven't finished!) and run both, it would be mental twin charging my m50!

It's easy to raise boost on an internal waste gate but you can't accurately make it any lower than the opening rating on the actuator.

Take a look at the Mac valves on efi-parts uk they can control both types of wastegates

True. I'd overlooked that, but I guess it depends how much of a linner curve you're looking for.

doesn't matter that its internal gated, just weld her up and run a external 38mm TIAL.

also, you have to run a -16AN oil drain on a hx35, thats 19mm internal, otherwise you'll get oil passing the seals. theres some internet bullshit about running 1mm oil feed reducers to clear smoke, weld up a 12x1.5 banjo bolt (oilfeed) and drill a hole through it start at 2mm, go smaller if its still passing, only if you have oil passing after using 19mm internal drain.

compressor racing are the best to get a turbo from, they have some very nice hy35\hx35 hybrids at the moment.

Yeah mate I'm in the south also. Down by cardiff airport.
Contact gunni about vems. Around 650 quid Iirc can run 2 switchable maps

Thanks for the info there. The sizes of the oil lines ect are some things that confuse me lol.
And thanks for the link I will no doubt be sourcing my turbo from them now thanks :)

On the wastegate issue. I will be welding up the penny on the internal and running an external as advised by craigeeb. . These simply won't work with internals

I can't wait to start buying for this now. The tubro will be the first thing I buy as it's heart of the build winkeye

There is a very very nice billet hx35 12cm twin scroll on compressor racing at the moment. Would suit this well.

If you guys need anything customised or machined pm me im in southwales my self .

Have fun

Figure wise I'm looking for 450. I think anymore than that in an e30 would be silly
If it makes 460 though I won't sniff at it lol

Where about in south wales are you bud?
I'm near the airport (Rhoose / St athan)

Pontypool/Abergavenny not too far 8)

Torque is where its at, bhp is just a number :)

Well I'm hoping with the hx35 and being twin scroll (I be getting one with the smaller housing for faster spool).. It should pack a nice punch in ft lbs

10cm twin scroll hx will be nice.

Dont forget you need 2x ex wastegates for twin scroll. Unless you buy a dedicated twinscroll gate.

If you run 1 and try and twin scrol it just untill the gate, you ruin the twin scrollness.

Didn't know that 8O
Thanks for the info

So people that run one wastegate on these basically no point having twin scroll at all then

And sure it was 12 cm

Usless you can get a very good seal on the gate, it will still work as a twin scroll but it'll loose twinscrollness at the point where it can swap between the 2 sides.

Its completely separate for a reason :)

Looks like an AR design manifold that . Wastegates are meant to be mounted in the direction of flow these are opposite !
But when space is tight needs must !
