My turbo 318i was more fun than my 2.7 and 3.5 M30, so it is worth doing but consider a few things first;
What is your budget?
Can you fabricate yourself?
Have you tried to get a insurance for the car with a turbo?
How are you going to tune the engine/ecu? If not yourself have you factored it into your budget?
Read the link below, it has lots of info and most will apply to your engine.
http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3237
Read my build also

You ask about oil cooler, does your car even have one?
The usual air meter is normally removed and a aftermarket ecu is used which have its own air measuring device. The intercooler normally fits infront of the radiator and throttle will take a pipe directly from the intercooler.
Read the links, then ask anything your unsure about.

Yes can fabricate, ive got at the moment about 1k, but with paydays can put more if needed. Will rebuild engine my self and ecu will get someone to look at. Also insurance not much difference

thanks for links and input

What kind of mapping would you suggest, wouldnt it run properly with standard ecu then?

You can do it for about a grand if you do almost all the work yourself.
Intercooler fits between the radiator and the kidney grills. I used a volvo/Saab intercooler and it slid up between the gap to the rear of the front valance with some supports nicely.
If your using the standard ecu youl'll be limited to around 7psi. Also you will need bigger injectors and a remap, that is if you can find someone to live remap the standard ecu.
You can see on my thread, I built a megasquirt ecu and tuned it myself.

Whats your plans with the ecu? It's not a 5 minute job, unless you buy one built. Its meant to be an 8 hour build i think, i did mine whilst watching tv over many evenings. So it would be a good idea get on that now. My ecu was built a couple months before I started my build, car started first time too

Your best bet if you don't feel like building an ecu yourself is either go to
http://www.extraefi.co.uk/# for megasquirt or Gunni at
http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... c&t=214262 for vems.

It might be worth going for ms2 or 3 depending on what you want from your ecu. You'll have to look through the features yourself and decide.
I would say it is a good idea to purchase afew other items at the same time like wasted spark and boost control parts.
