Hmmm, so I could of been looking at this all wrong....
Going for a "big" engine to turbo when I could achieve the same result with a smaller engine, hmm
2.5 with the 2.8 internals, arp bolts, good gasket, standalone and a turbo could see 500 then.
iiiiinteresting

m50 will run 500 all day long on stock internals now if you want silly power just boost a s50 would cost you a small fortune which is the other thing you need to take in to concideration the cost
running that sort of power means everything else needs to be upgraded like brakes suspension etc

M50 2.8 turbo here dude, one thing you are not going to have is any traction

I dont want silly power, I would just like 500
Brakes/suspension is all covered and will obviously be strengthening the diff, see a few rip the rear to shreds, not nice.

That thing is just insane, i'm sure its pushing out about 7/800 brake, no wonder there's no traction,
thats the other thing i'll be looking into, it'll be on semi slick's to help it round the corners,
but I'll look into that closer to the time

How would one go about strengthening the diff mounts hanger
I assume the medium case e30 diff would cope with 500bhp?

m10 cheap and easy us ones make over 300bhp on a budget

What sort of cost would be involved for an m10 turbo around 300bhp

If your building a road weapon just get a V8 IMO, turboing an S50 is sacrilege and just a waste of money, you could have built two cars by the time your finished.
I wouldnt put an S50 in a road car anyway, they dont come alive until your in the high rpm's which is not my idea of road driving

If I go for the V8 I'll have to turbo it, but then iv got the feeling its going to be a bit uncontrollable,
The V8 is a good beefy engine, but it'll not see 500 brake without some turbos.
Unless I use my nitrous set up, but im wanting to moving away from that.
I just want an all day long constant 500 brake for the weekend toy,
The 2.8 will be kept as the daily driver, shopper/school run

What about a rice engine? But if you want to stick with BMW id go M50...
Whats your budget?

I'll be sticking with a BMW engine,
Im sort of swaying towards the m50 engine with the 2.8 internals tbh
Budget wise, as long as I buy her a new cooker, I dont have one
but im not a millionaire.

So 3K? 10K? 15K??
If your thinking of building the guts from a 2.8 into a M50 why not go 3.0?

M50 for shizzle!
Build a budget one to start with and to hone your skills, whilst building a monster on the side!

So whatever you spend on a cooker you can blow on a car?
Cool idea using an M50.

May aswell get a non-vanos donk of you're going turbo mate, as you'll probably be going standalone ECU? I believe (although may not be correct on this) aftermaket ECU stuff struggles to control vanos

I know of a non vanos lump too, came out of an auto 525ix.

Yep your right there mate, i think the non vanos will be easier to map
I know where I can get my hands on a non vanos 2.5,
and already been intouch with gunni
for prices of the vems set up, and some mapping
leeparkes wrote:I know of a non vanos lump too, came out of an auto 525ix.
I can get a hold of one,
but just in case, do you know much about it?
mileage price etc etc

Iirc it is a 120K lump but the inlet is missing and the sump wont be any use coming out of an ix but everything else is there, ancillaries, loom etc...
If you do get stuck let me know and we can work something out.

My first thoughts were to just go for the S50, but is it really going to be fast enough?
My second naughty naughty thought was going to be the M60/62 Twin turbo, but will those engines cope with the boost...? Could an S50?
so any suggestions on what engine i can use to get the best out of it with a tubby
Stick to M50´s for sub 650hp, S50´s for above if you go turbo.
The M50 is now the popular choice in Sweden when it comes to swaps + turboing for all cars.
A 2.5 M50 will do 500hp on stock internals with a 0.14 MLS gasket and ARP studs.

Id imagine a 2.5 will be as good as a 2.8 with a blower up it, less stress on the rods for a start

What gearbox would be best suited for an m50 turbo?
Im thinking the iS box won't cope with the power....??

328i/S50 box, there a direct 5th though so you will need a long diff, ie if your going for 500hp it will need to be around 2.93 (or lower)
That is one long ass diff, with 205/55/15's and direct 5th box it will hit 167mph.
With an overdrive box it will hit 206mph.
Mmmmmmmmmmmm

If I go for the 2.93/2.65 diff, will it be a straight fit?
i.e it will bolt straight up with the 2.8 prop and straight on to the E30 drive shafts? (i suspect not..?)
i'll be going for a "twin ear" diff cover and adding an extra mounting point on the rear of the car,
after reading loads and loads of different builds iv just wrote out my shopping list
ooo getting a little bit excited now, what a gayer!!
also does anyone know what would be the best injectors to use?

You would need to ask what the diff came off, im guessing if he's selling on here it should fit with a back plate of your choice.

There's no turning back now
This thing is HEAVY.
Im going to have to put some major bracing on the manifold when its made.
Cheers Gunni
I'll be intouch soon for the vems and what not's
