Turbo and LPG

Is it possible to have such a combination? Has anyone tried it?
Would it work well the turbo management (MS btw). What sort of extra cost would this involve if it's possible?
M30 turbo'd and LPG'd would be an awesome combination

I cant see why not, infact I think it would work great, LPG has a high RON rating so you could run silly

boost with out fear of knocking and it would be cheap to fill it up..
I am sure Gunny will know

cant see it being a problem at all ive seen a few nissan skylines and stageas with lpg and there 2.5 turbo would think youd have to run a more expensive lpg sytem with the multi point injection

It will come down to the adjustability of the Lpg setup.
I´m not sure what the current requirement is on the lpg injectors.
But some ecu´s could easily run them depending on the setup.
Other then that it´s just another fuel.

Any recommendations for a LPG kit suitable for this kind of conversion?
I've got megasquirt to run the turbo side.

There's no problem running a turbo on LPG with a simple venturi system. All you need to ensure is that you have a vaporiser which has a stub pipe connection to the normally atmospheric side of its diaphragm, so that you can connect a tube to reference it to the boost pressure

Or use a multipoint LPG setup and MS V3 (afaik) to run two sets of injector drivers then you can have a petrol map and a LPG map.
I am by no means an expert on MS stuff but there's a lot of info out there

With a multipoint LPG vapour injection system there should also be no problems, as long as it runs properly on petrol. The LPG ECU will be able to modify the petrol injector pulses on a forced induction engine the same as on a NA one.

Normal unleaded = 95 ron
Optimax = 99 ron
LPG = 107 ron or thereabouts
So you could run even more ignition advance and possibly get a few extra horses without detonation

I'm halfway through installing a megasquirt LPG system on my car - injectors are 3ohm impedance, to run them like the petrol ones on an M20/M30 etc you need to either split the banks (bank1 petrol, bank2 lpg) and run PWM injector control, or do what I did and put some inline resistors in the connectors to bring them to the 15 odd ohms (15.3 IIRC for my skyline injectors) required.
Boost seems highly possible with LPG, huge resistance to knock... A potential advancement on my project once I've understood the megasquirt side a bit better! But one step at a time...

Chilton and Onslow-Cole seem to be doing quite well with LPG turbo power in the BTCC at the moment.

Thinking about this the other day...
LPG requires heat to vaporise it.
Turbos generate unwanted heat in the intake air.
So heat the vaporiser via a (semi)closed loop through an air/water intercooler.
My calculations indicate that this setup could give a intake temperature drop of up to 16C - under all conditions.

I'll finish my M30 turbo + LPG BMW E12 this summer. It's already quite close to be finished so yes I deff think it will work

Respect is due DMS!! Great build..
What colour did you paint the engine bay?

Thanks about the respect thingy
It's the original color. It'll be completely repainted some day but I want to make a few more changes to the body before it's ready for paint.
Before I can do anything on the E12 again I'll have to make sure my daily E30 is running decent again. I'm currently working on a swap engine and hope to finish this before the summer. When the sun shines again I'll start with the E12 and get that up and running. Hopefully I can spend the winter of 2012/2013 building an integrated cage and a rear suspension with E34 M5 LSD to have a safe and reliable E12

one thing to remember is although lpg does have a higher octane rating, it is alot lower in energy compared to petrol to you have to inject alot more for the same bang meaning alot bigger injectors etc
now injecting liquid lpg has alot more benefits but is very coslty due to the high pressures needed to keep it liquid etc
