BMW e46 318 Sport

My e46 1.8 is running rough on tickover lumpy and uneven, when driven all seems fine, when you get to 4000 rpm you can feel it again as if it is pulling back for a split second , any ideas.

From personal experience the following equation applies with N42 wrongness:
Valvetronic = empty pockets.
So bad an engine you can tell it was designed when BMW were in bed with Rover.
Regarding the OP's question, I don't know I'm afraid! My old one was like that on idle when a coil pack died but that resulted in it running rough and lacking power regardless of speed/rpm. You really don't want any timing chain/tensioner drama with one of these...
