starting problems with my daily e36 316i auto m43

Hello everyone,
I'm having problems with my daily e36 316i auto M43 N reg,
has new starter motor, recently serviced (oil, filters and spark plugs),one new plug lead as the old one had a split
only 43k miles on the clock
starts after few tries...sometimes refusing to start at all...the starter works the engine is turning over but is not firing
what are the bits and connections to check?!
