VW T4 pump timing

I recently got a 2.5 tdi T4 and all has been well until yesterday on our way home from Scotland.
Long story short but I think the fuel pump belt has slipped a tooth or two - it will start with a struggle and then idle like crap.

I need to get it hooked up to Vagcom but haven't got a copy.... anybody have a working link to Vagcom and which cable I need to connect my laptop to a T4? :D

Cheers

I bought a lead and software off eBay for about £10, worked fine.

I've had dramas once before with a 2.5tdi. Cambelt snapped threw the timing completely out, new head. Couldn't get the bastard to run on the original pump timing marks. Ended up borrowing a DTI gauge to screw into the diesel pump and timing it up like that.

Thanks Max. So just a cheap cable and software like this one should be good?

I've heard timing these properly can be a bitch, so I'm looking forward to that!

That's all I bought something along those lines.

There is marks there I have done belts on the timing side in the past and fuel pump without out issue. There is timing marks but they're a pain to see I'm sure you need use of a mirror.

I do believe I've got the special timing tools for the engine aswell.

Well, if only it was the pump timing...

The timing belts were changed about 5k miles ago (I've done 1k miles since buying the van) and it turns out a monkey replaced the belts and didn't torque the bottom pulley bolt properly... resulting in the bolt/belt pulley coming loose over time causing the woodruff key to pretty much wear away! This was enough to put the timing out so it wouldn't run but luckily not enough to cause any head damage. But the pulley is fecked and more importantly so is the crankshaft :(

It may sound gash, but replace the timing pulley crank pulley and keys and set the keys in the crank with chemical metal.
The keys are not there to hold the pulleys only locate them, it's the friction created by the bolt that stops them moving.
It should be fine for many years even though it's a bit of a bodge.
Coincidently I've just repaired an XUD Pug engine with the exact same problem.

That idea certainly crossed my mind! But this one will be kept for a while. I bought it cheap enough to not mind spending some money on it and I know it'll be a goodun for a for years...

So £1200 for an unknown mileage T4 lump or £500 for a Volvo V70 tdi with 110k and history to prove. I'm sure you can guess which way I went.
Both engines out last week, everything swapped over and timing belts etc renewed today and it should be slotted back in beginning of next week. Then a remap to suit the larger Volvo injectors and off for MOT. Fingers crossed!

Luckily they're not a bad engine to take in and out, front end comes off with ease.

Plus you'll be able to sell spares off your old engine.
