I used to borrow a lesser version of these, a 214. And to be fair, it wasn't a bad car. Certainly on of Leylands better efforts. But then Honda had a lot to do with them did they not? There was certainly a lot of them sold.

There is a very good reason these are 'rare' and its not because they didnt make many!

That has the honda back to front engine/box which is probably the only reason it still works :D

Indeed, the 214 was basically a badly built Honda Civic / Ballade with a bit of plastic wood strewn about . The mechanics generally outlived the body, unlike the 216.......

Some friends of my dads had one of these from new, was fairly reliable but terminal rot killed it within a relatively short period rust protection appeared to be an option on these turds

The lesser version was the 213, the car I took my test in during 1985. Very nippy cars and better than the BL S series 216. The 1989 wedgy version was a very good car and leagues ahead of the Escort and Golf.

Indeed you are right. The 213 moniker reflected the 1342cc all alloy Honda naughty lump. The 214 was its K series afflicted wedge shaped successor.

I had a 213 for a while, 12v Honda lump iirc, nice comfy car but it rotted out very badly! Torsion bar front suspension I think it had?

the 213 was indeed graced with a japanese donk the 216 had a maestro lump, IIRC the 213 had more bhp ! first time I ever did a FWD clutch was on one of these bad boys...

It actually drove pretty good, well... better than the Triumph acclaim I had at the time :o
