The first one looks very familiar. I have a feeling that might have been owned by a lad I went to nightschool with about 10 years back.

If it is, it was his pride and joy and was very well looked after. Might be worth asking if the car spent anytime in Paisley, Scotland.

i can tell you Bognor regis is a shite place to go on holiday polsta :)

iv only had one golf, which was a Mk2 16v, never had a bit of trouble seems well built and reasonably fast, but they are heavy so i would think the 8v would be pretty sluggish.

theyre just over 900kg, which definately isn't heavy. a MINI cooper weighs over 1200kg. but they do feel pretty sturdy, not as nimble as a french hatch, but much better built and far easier to work on and less likely to throw you off the road backwards if you get a bit too enthusiastic.

the mrs has had her mk2 8v gti as her main car for the past 5 years, and it costs buttons to run and has been very reliable, and plenty practical enough for ferrying two children and assorted stuff around.

with 115bhp and 900kg it's no rocket ship, but it's entertaining enough and great fun to throw around.

0-60 is in the low 8 seconds bracket, not as quick as a 325i, but as quick if not a tad quicker than a 318is.

the 16v is definately the one to go for if you can find one though. just as punchy low down as the 8v, but will keep on pulloing where the 8v runs out of puff. ignor the nonsense about the 8v being more torquey, it's not.

not to be Pedantic , but i will :) a mk2 fiesta kerb weight is about 800kg, a mk2 golf is about 1100kg. not sure what mini cooper you meant but i thought they came in about 650kg. my old man used to have a weigh bridge as part of his steel pickling business, so i used to run alot of my old cars over it see the weight.

so golfs are pretty weighty in comparison to other cars in the hot hatch bracket of the time, plus the fact most fords are even lighter due to built in factory rust :)

An 8v golf is just over 900kg, and considerably bigger and better built than a mk2 fiesta rot box.

By MINI I meant the new version, which isn't far off the same size as a mk2 golf.

ha the new minis not really a mini though is it expect in name,

is that dry weight, as in no oil water etc seems lighter than i rememeber.

ho yes as i said above fords will always be lighter, they where rusting leaving the factory :)

8O you went on holiday there ? a town full of smack/crack heads, half hr drive from me

on the weight/sluggish note guys, im not too fussed really, i need something cheap ish reliable for work just banging about not caring too much about milage and having cheaper fuel costs than a 325i and a range rover, a mk2 wouldnt be bad as classic insurance, yet i dont really want anything with rust issues
