Hi all,

Can anyone help, I'm trying to find out what the part number is for the starter motor in my car?

It's a 318i M10 in a late preface E30.

The item in the car is a bosch starter, part number 0331303117-617 but I have a feeling that this isn't the correct starter for this car. It needs replacing either ways, it sounds terrible.

thankyou

Putting your vin number into realoem is usually the best way

I have done this but dont have much faith with it. Whenever I have quoted part numbers from this website BMW have informed they are incorrect

Well it has worked quite well for the BMWs I have

I guessed at your car in Realoem (1986/manual/RHD) it came up with 12411269696 which equates to Bosch 0986010630 or 0986 010637

0331303117 equates to a starter solenoid not a starter which could be the problem

Thankyou for this, I'll have another look and see if I can see the number on the motor. Hopefully, it's one of the numbers you have listed

Cheers

Ok so I've just been outside and managed to get the part number which is 1005821506 off the motor.

I've just done a quick search now and its listed as compatible for a few variations but my 318 M10 engine doesnt seem to be one of them

This could explain why it doesnt sound great when turning over

Possibly used on a 318 also but an E36 E39 possibly some others but certainly not on an E30 M10

Hopefully you have not chewed the ring gear on the flywheel 8O

Hopefully not, I'm guessing the starter has been on there a while. I'll look through paperwork and see if I can find anything.

The garage the previous owner used certainly took the lady for a ride with some of the stuff I've seen so far

Just an update but I fitted the correct starter motor to the car yesterday and all is now well.

The part number for the correct starter motor as quoted by BMW and flybynite is 12411269696 in case anyone else needs this in the future.

The joys of putting right shoddy work continue. Yesterday was looking at the exhaust brackets and was reassured that it was installed corectly, I wasn't sure as it hung far too low. So, wheeled out the jack, got under the car and immediately found the problem. The rear bracket had been installed incorrectly and also hung from the car using a very flimsy looking jubilee clip.

One bodge remains and that is sorting out the coolant hoses but will do that at the same time I service the car.

I'm no mechanic but would rather sort this car myself, just going to take a bit more time but atleast I will know corners will not be cut
