M10 revs to 4K and hits a "rev limiter"

I've got a 1984 318is, m10 fuel injection. I'm having a problem with the engine reving. I've replaced spark plugs, wires distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter, dme, afm, fpr, ignition controller, I've cleaned all chassis &a engine grounds. Car wants to rev until 4K then acts like its hitting a rev limiter, I've checked for vacuum leaks I'm out of ideas help much needed.

Never heard of it applying to an M10, which I've only very limited experience of, especially injected versions, but the later M40 engine, which you didn't get in the US, will act like it has a 4k rev. limiter if its camshaft is badly worn.

Distributor advance could be fucked, Vacuum operated.
Could also be the is it Telefunken or siemens, Electrics to the distributor.
My M10 was acting like it had a rev limiter to, AFM was faulty, But u say u changed that one already.
Could also be your TPS.
Could be your exhaust "clogged up". Could be anything really heheh, Maybe a good reason for a engine swap, Try to "break" the M10 and sell it in parts. :)

Just compare the old rotor with the new one. Same happened to me when instaling a new rotor. The tiny arm that stretches the spring (that makes the rev limiter happen by centrifuge) was bent and the thing was rev cuting at 4500!!! After looking at both, i noticed the new one had that arm bent. Bent it to the same shape, checked that the spring moved freely, installed it back and that it.

That way i found out 2 secrets! ;)

Warning! --- Don´t come crying if you brake your engine! ---

Secret 1- Bent the spring the way you wish and presto- rev limiter à la carte!

Secret 2- Remove the spring and the conector and rev limiter be gone! (BAD IDEA!!!)

Id just fit a normal rotor arm, did this on several M10's years ago. If you have an ounce of mechanical sympathy or even half a brain you dont need a rev limiter :D

Hehe, I did that to both my L-Jetronic 320i's - ditch the centrifugal rev limiter in the rotor arm, which cuts in abruptly at 6,000rpm; the ECU in any case has it's own built-in rev limiter, set at 6,250rpm or so, which has a far more progressive cut.

Did BMW make a fuel injected M10 with a distributor?

Yes - see the first photo (M10B18) of the Wiki guide to M10 engines:

M10s are very hardy but I'd suggest against having no limiter in the dizzy or waiting for the ECU to cut in.

If you blow the head, leave the block outside and piss on it daily, in 5 years you'll have a turbo prepped block.
