E30 Zone

I know what the general feeling is on the b30, but it was what was available.

Right, Engine is in, gearbox, Rad, manifolds etc all done....

But I cant get the thing to start!

The mechanic had had some bad advice re the wiring, so had connected what he could via the diagnostic connector (it is an 84 so he had been loking for the round connector, not the rectangular one) I have now done the adaptor from the available pin outs. It was an auto donor so I cut away the auto ecu and all its wires from the loom.

When the key is turned the engine turns but does not catch. Now this happened before with the dodgy loom connection, but we were hotwiring the car (due to a stuffed ignition key) and it would catch rev and then die. I found that the fuel pump was getting 12v when the starter was being jumped, but as soon as there was no power to the starter the fuel pump would loose power.

Anyway, loom connector is now correct (99.9% sure), fuel pump and relays have been changed, so what next?

What have I missed or not done correctly?

Please help as i have almost had it with this conversion!

On the main relay, Pin#30 has permanent 12v, when cranking both pin#87 only get 0.14v

Just to be sure it was not the new relay, I bypassed the relay using a jumper and one of the pin#87 outlets(inner) then has 12v, the other (outer) does not and the pump doesn't run. When I do this the ICV at the front of the engine buzzes.

On the fuel pump relay, i jumped the connection and the fuel pump runs.

I cant see a green supply wire to the main relay, There is a thick red to pin#30, a thin red (connected to the same bunch of wires as the think red, a brown that goes to the ecu, and the two pin#87 outputs.

Battery dies so I am charging, and will try starting with jumped fuel relay and see what happens.

Any pointers for what this means?

Had another go.

Bypassed main relay, and jumped fuel relay.....no start, just crank as before.

So, am I correct in thinking that there is something wrong with the ECU? It seems that both the main and fuel relays are not activated, they have power and can be bypassed, but pin 85 on the main remians positive (i think it should turn to a negative when told to by ecu?), and that wire goes to the ecu, same for the fuel pump relay.

On the loom adaptor I made, I have pin 10 (which is pin7 from the facelift e30 c101) going to pin21 of the m60 x20. I will check for 12v there tomorrow.

I have the pinouts for the m60 ecu, but not wire colours, I will take the connector apart also to trace which wire connects from pin56 to the engine connector and pin21.

Thanks Willnz, it may not be running, but I feel that I am at least heading in the right direction rather than going round in circles!

My m60 was an auto, so i have the shielded wire that joined the two ecu's with a black and yellow wire. I cut the wire and joined the black wire and yellow wire. Can you confirm that this is also correct?

I had 12v from the c101 all the way along through my adaptor to the x20, but on the other side of the x20 there was no 12v?! So I ran a wire from the c101 to the other side of the x20 and all the relays clicked and the icv started buzzing.

Turned the key, a bit of throttle and it lit and idled!

Not sure why the x20 was bad, but hey-ho.

Now I need to make the exhaust quieter as it was embarrassingly loud!

I will tidy up the wiring and then its road test time!
