Hi there,
Thinking of doing this conversion is there a complete part list available?
Engine
So the way I understand it we can use a 540 or a 740 lump from either a e39 e34 and whatever the seven series is. Most of these will come auto but this doesnt matter as we can use the manual box. They way I look at it from looking on this forum the M60B40 is the best engine the 4.0 V8. Does the sump need to be changed or will it be right on the 4L lump?
Gearbox
Gearbox, I need a manual box from a 5 series, this can be either 5 or 6 speed and needs to be from a v8 5 series e39,e34 again, Am I correct in thinking the 5 speed will go straight in but the 6 speed may need some tunnel modifications? Will anything else fit?
Brakes
You have several options looking at it here, As far as I understand you need to relocate the brake servo to where the battery tray used to be on the left hand side of the engine (looking at it from the front) what servo is required and do you use a normal e30 master cylinder or do you also change this? I belive that you also require a brake booster is this correct?
You then come onto calipers, the options are endless here from looking around, one of the cheaper options from looking is to use 4 pots from a mazda rx7 with some custom mounts, you then use discs with the centres that have been bored out 1mm. I guess braided lines are required here.
Are there any other options here?
Prop
What prop is required, for both 5 speed and 6 speed what are the options I don't think there is a off the shelf option here also but am I right in thinking you use a prop from a 5 series and then have the e30 diff end fitting welded on?
Diff
The diff from what I have been reading a e30 m3 diff is a good diff to use? around 2.93 or 3.25 is about the right ratio for the 5 speed or 6 speed boxes, are there any other cars you can get the diff from?
Custom parts
I know the prop is going to be a custom part, the engine mounts and the gearbox mounts are also going to be a custom part, I see you can v8 conversion mounts off ebay are these any good? also are there any other parts which are going to need to be made custom?
Wiring
So you use the e39/34 ecu and wiring loom here, I guess it gets modified to the e30 any other custom parts that need to be thought about here?
cooling
I guess you can either use a custom rad or you could use the cooling system from the e39 and use electric fans.
clutch/flywheel
So if you get a manual I guess you already have the flywheel that you need but if you get an auto what flywheel is required? and what clutch will take some abuse from the track/drifting? Do you just use a normal 540 clutch?
Suspension
Here I guess you want to have the car a little stiffer from stock, so i guess lowing springs or coilovers for the extra weight etc.
Steering
What steering rack can you use here? at the moment my car has a manual rack so I was thinking something like a e36/e46 rack, then use the power steering pump from the 540 lump will this work?
Anything else
Is there anything else cruical I have missed that need to be considered?
