Hi Gents,
Can anyone let me know what engine mounts to use for the S50 in an E30?

Also, does anyone know the part number for this bracket?
I cant seem to see it on the ETK (or at least it doesn't look like the same part).

The alloy arms are the E36 items. The rubber mounts are either E28 M5 (one round, one oblong shape) or the expensive akg mounts for track use cars.
I'll have a dig through the left overs of my S50 conversion, I might have that bracket in a box of bits.

Thanks Jim, that would be really handy!
I think I need to get one of side, as the nearside looks like the M5 one.
What about gearbox?

These are the mounts I used...
http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E28/S ... on_damper/
The rubber mount No.8 has 3 part numbers, the number ending 201 should be the M5 specific mount for the offside - it should look like part No.12 in the diagram.
On the round mount for the near side (I think it's a basic M30 mount), the little tang on the bottom of the mount needs cutting off flush with the mount. As you can see, the threads are offset and the mount needs to rotate to line up with the mounting arm and hole in the subframe, otherwise the mount will start to twist and tear. From memory, you need to use the slotted hole in the subframe, not the usual round mounting hole. ( the little tang is above the bottom left red arrow)....
For the gearbox mount, I used the E30 crossmember and E36 M3 rubber mounts - that was for the 5spd box. The 6spd needs a modded crossmember.

Ok so, when sitting in the car, the grey looking diamond mount need to be on the right engine arm and the cylindrical is on the left engine arm with the modifications shown above?
Im using the 5spd box, will google images of the mounts

Yup, thats how ian332isport told me to fit them.
I think the thinking was the round M30 mount on the near side (left mounting arm when sitting in the car) and the bigger oblong/diamond mount on the off side (right mount from inside car) to help support the heavier S38 when cornering and to prevent contact issues with the S38 6 branch.
I think Ian just followed the idea for the S50, although with hard cornering (track use) and the tighter clearance with the S50 manifolds, there can be contact between manifold and steering joint - I never had issues on my conversion.
It's only the 6spd box that needs a modded crossmember - I'm sure Ian's pics must be on here somewhere.
The 5spd is a simple bolt in job.

5-speed ZF box bolts up fine with standard E30 cross-member - at least with an M52 (should be same for S50). I did need to drill out the holes for the gearbox mounts slightly to fit the E21 mounts, but that took all of 2 mins.
Gear shifter doesn't quite come up centre in the E30 transmission tunnel hole - it sits slightly forward and slightly to the right - but only by 10-15 mm I guess, so it's plenty usable

Im going to modify the gear lever mechanisms as I it has to be as OE as possible!

Gear linkage should need no modifying. As motorhole said, the gear lever may sit slightly off, although I think is down to which linkage parts are used - I used the E36 M3 lever and to begin with the lever hit the front of the surround in reverse and 1st - I changed the shifter rod for a shorter one to lean the lever back a little and it felt good and didn't look out of line/place. I can't remember which arm or rod I used, but I might be able to find the info if my old computer will work.

Thanks Crossie,
This is a road car only and the AKG mounts would be too harsh

I have used AKG mounts before and they are noticeably harsh especially if you also have their gearbox mounts.
Dont get me wrong, as far as mounts go for track cars they are very good value!

AKG mounts are fine for a S50'd road car, the S50 is an epic anchor so its not shy on the rubbers at all
E34 sump/oil pickup tube and dipstick.
Nice cable ties Andrew
