I'm experiencing a low rattling sound from the engine when I'm driving over 2 500 RPM and I assume it's the chain tensioners fault.

Why can I not see any threads on the chain tensioner?

It's an insert, there is a bolt that holds it inplace.

people usually repalce the M42 tensionner by an M44 one, which have a little better design, I did it, nothing wrong with it, but can't tell if they're is improvement

Okay, that clears things up a bit. Can I use the old parts of 18 and 19 and only replace the tensioner (17), or should I replace all of the parts?

By the way I can't hear any rattling sound when the car is standing still when I rev the engine. The rattling sound does only occur when I'm driving in 100+ km/h.

and are you sure that the sound is from the engine? personally i only changed the tensionner, i reused bolt and washer

It seems to be from the engine because if I press down the clutch or just put in neutral while driving 90+ km/h the sound disappears.

I've realized the sound also occurs when I'm revving the engine while standing still.

I had this problem, mine was ok at idle but anything after 2k and quite a loud rattle was heard from the front of the engine.

I tried the updated m44 tensioner (think the new design extends out more taking up more stretch) this helped but didn't cure.

Pulled the rocker cover of to find the cam sprockets pointed i.e badly warn.

The first M42 that I had fail in a spectacular manner had new looking sprockets but the idler coge mount had snapped away from the case (turns out that whoever had it before me had attempted to weld it for a fix, DIDNT WORK!

Now Im trying to delete the idler coge cos I think the "weak link" idler coge could snap of with the extra strain of the new chain/sprocket kit & whats the point in spending £ if its guna go bang!

anyway, yours doesn't rattle in gear??

Yes, mine does rattle in gear aswell.

What is an idler coge mount?

Neah man should be cool when im kaning it with a nice sounding engine..

What does kaning mean?

Kaning it means: hoofin it, tanning its ass, smoking it, giving it some laldy, kicking its head in, lighting it up... basically trying to drive fast whilst not righting the car or a on coming motorist off!!

The coge is attached to the inner casing via a mount, this mounts can break off.

I changed the tensioner and I think the rattling sound got a little bit lower, but the problem still persist.
