just wondering the power gains you can expect from fitting a turbo to the m42b18 without major changes to the internals?are there any problems with reliability of the turbo m42?

dont think this will last to long, will need alot of cooling, new mapping, head work, more work and then some... far from easy bolt on job.

Theres a few S/C threads on here and the outcome of them is around 200bhp (twin screw) and a one with 280bhp (rotex charger) but these have had fair bit of work and not an easy job. if you read the threads look at the time and dates as these things take time and dont happen over a weekend or two.

Why would it not last long? OP is talking about major changes to the internals. Major changes are not required for 300bhp. A standard engine should be able to take a bar of boost, a bar of boost should give approx 300bhp. He didn't ask about any other parts required. ECU, manifold, intercooler, injectors and boost pipes are all needed.

As for the supercharged engines threads, using the eaton charger isn't really worth the effort as it heats the air up too much on the M42, so and intercooler or laminovas are required and makes fitment into a big job. The rotrex M42 with 280bhp@12psi would make over 300bhp if it didn't have the drag of the supercharger itself, like a turbo doesn't.

If you had the parts to hand and knew what you were doing it could be done in a weekend or two.

thanks for the feedback.have you ever heard of anyone turbo/supercharging the m40b16?im only 19 so one of the problems is keeping a small enough engine to get insured on which is why im looking at taking the route of forced induction.

if u have proper moddified car insurance engine size doesnt matter usually goes on BHP!

or @ least when i have been with andrian flux/hic/brentacre bhp limit is how its done

i see, ill look into getting some quotes, up until now ive done some for a 'non-standard engine' and the cheapest i got was 5k+.some of the modified car insurance companies that i have tried to get a quote from only allow drivers of 21+ or 23+.

I'm glad I passed my test back in 07 and had the chance to enjoy relatively resonable car insurance and cheap fuel before it all went nuts.

As above,you might find it more of an challenge finding some one to insure a turbo'd car over one with a 2.5 lump thrown in.

What engine do you have fitted? the M42 or M40b16?

ive got the m40b16, wanted the 318is but the insurance was too high.but i thought id get one anyway and make a project out of it cuz im just starting an automotive engineering degree
