316i exhaust and 318i exhaust are identical, as are most things on these two cars, except for the obvious 200cc.
The only* way you'll get more power out of it is to make sure it's running as it was when it left the factory. Checking over everything, making sure it's all in spec., including having the injectors rebuilt (see injectortune in our traders' section). All this will produce far more gains than any aftermarket tat, and won't upset your insurance company one bit.
*Apart from bolting a turbocharger onto the side of it.

Fit a 1.8. The engine number will have rusted away a long time ago and it very difficult to see anyway.

look on kentcams.com they do fast road cams, port polish, head skim, ram air intake will stainless induction pipe (ebay), really hot coil pack, plugs and leads and im sure you will feel the difference (look on demontweeks) stainless exhaust with the manifold and down pipe wraped with ceramic
hell i haven't got a problem with insurance and im thinking of going this way
get the engine running as cool as possible is the most important
bmw engine bays get really hot really quickly so dont just stick a cone air filter on and expect +12bhp
