i'm getting a full custom S/S system built for my 318iS in a few weeks & i am little unsure as to what i want?
the fabricator asked if i want to go for a near copy of the standard system with same size silencer boxes and back box or would i like it with 1 silencer box less?
he suggested that i go for: a similar size 1st box (just after the down pipe) as it will help with any needed back pressure and to go for one slightly larger than the standard 2nd silencer box then straight to the back box which is one silencer box less than standard. he has also said he can build it to what ever noise level i want.. i told him as quite as posable
any thoughts please?

I've never seen an iS with 4 boxes...
They've always had the resonator box, center box and backbox.
Getting rid of the middle one (start of the rear half of the system) is fine usually though with a well chosen backbox

Just out of interest how much is ge charging you for it. Is it from the downpipe onwards?

not had the exhaust made yet, hopefully it'll be made & fitted over the next 2 wks.. they quoted me between £195-£220 depending on the style of back box i go for & yes it will be from the down pipe
i'll get a price for making a S/S manifold & down pipe when i take my car over.. for the future
i had quotes from a few places ranging up to £440

you know the manifolds on the M42 are already stainless as well as being a 4-branch, yeah?
A 4-1 manifold can have improvements alright if your building a heavily modded engine but probably not worth the cost on just a standard engine or one with mild mods.

cheers Dave.. my mate who's an exhaust fitter just pointed out to me last week that the standard manifold was stainless, i knew it was a 4-2-1 system though
i was hoping to have had my new system fitted by now but looking like another 2wks before i'm sorted

Not a bad price. I've been qouted a grand by my nearest reputable fabricator to develop a manifold. He is a pain tho, he won't put his name to anything that's not perfect. He'll want the car for ages, map it change it etc until it makes power etc. I had to beg him to cut off and re-attach the hangers on my powerflow system to get it to sit better.

-and the standard manifold isn't stainless, I'm pretty sure it's mild steel, or it's very poor quality as every one I've seen is oxidised (rusty) like you'd expect a mild steel one too.

It is stainless. Just a very low grade of stainless.
The part you saw that was oxidized was probably the flange plates which aren't stainless alright.

"AT LAST!" that's me now got my E30 booked in for it's custom built Stainless system next friday morning
i was originally going for a "downpipe-back" set up but my good mate & fellow Zoner (
Craiggy) has given me his spare "never fitted" S/Steel Scorpian back box so all the fabricators need to do is build one centre box and pipe work from D/pipe to back box (and hang the back box)
i can't wait to get rid of my patch work exhaust!
