Hi,

I know this may have been asked before but the search results for some reason reset after the 1st page every time I try so, I apologise if its a daft question.

I been searching all over the net about this and no definitive answer.

Can an S50 oil filter housing fit to an M42 so I can fit an oil cooler?

Been looking at photos of the backs of the housings and starting to think the answer is a no.

Best way would be to get the mocal adapter and have a remote oil filter and Cooler running off that

It's not as easy as that, the M42 doesn't use a canister type filter, but an element type filter.

i can't ever recall anyone asking the question about running an oil cooler on an M42. I'm pretty sure an S50 one wouldn't fit.

I have seen some adaptors that bolt too the housing under the filter lid with AN fittings.

I have seen the kits where the take off ports are on the filter housing cap, just wasn't too sure if its a good way of doing so.

Would an M42 need a cooler for drift days / track days? or do they cool ok as they are?

I don't like the idea personally of the caps on top of the housing. But I guess they're tried and tested otherwise they wouldn't sell them.

Fit an oil temp gauge and run it on a track day and then you can determine whether you need an oil cooler.

I ran 15w50 in my E30 with an M20 as that is designed to run at a higher temperature.

Yea I think you're right there, will get a gauge fitted and see how it runs, then decide. Got a full set of set of Stack gauges there from my s14 to fit into this car now

Yea, I seen them. The red ones? seen threads on 318ti.org and m42club. Its another option to consider, same idea to what the Tomei oil plates do on SR20s. Just means running an external oil filter.
Think I will get it running with gauges and see how hot it runs, then decide wether I need a cooler or not.

Just to add. Ive been mailing a company called thinkauto and they are currently designing caps that replace the screw on caps above the filter on a m42 as well as a similar one for a m44. They said it should be ready to sale early this year

Ah cool! I will keep that in mind dude, still need to get mine running first. Will see what temp I run on track days. Drift days are the worst, 40 seconds or so of redline and then 10 minutes of sitting waiting for your next run

I hadn't seen this. That Mocal plate isn't ideal, I had one fitted to my car but it doesn't work with the alternator bracket. Back in October I started speaking to Rich at TunkAuto and going over this. I sent them some bits and he's been designing a cap. Managed to convince them as it can be used across a large range of BMW engines. Last time we spoke they were still pricing it up so I will give him a nudge and see if it has progressed.

If they want to roll those out to some kind of volume production then it is something we can probably help with.

We would be able to either put them in touch with one of the 3 good uk foundries we use or be able to sort some kind of direct purchasing for them.

The number of times I have heard people complaining about oil temps/coolers on the M5x engines I can see some legs to that project.

Cheers of the link bud. Think Auto (Mocal) produce all shape and size of top plate, take off, sandwich plate, remote housings etc so I assume they have a facility or company they already use for these. They have just emailed me back and said it looks to be about 3 or 4 weeks and will retail at £124.16, part number is OCTBMW2 :thumb:
