E30 Zone

Hi Gents,

Wonder if you could please spare some knowledge...

I had originally purchased an a E30 m52tub28 1999 with a blown head gasket about 2 years ago after some time I have finally managed to Swap out the engine like for like but just a year younger
2000.

So after some slight rough idles and poor acceleration which have calmed down totally, I decided to plug in my OBD2 fault detector which keeps coming up with the code P0430 which refers to Camshaft position (CMP) sensor A, bank 1 circuit malfunction...

I can say I have replaced this sensor that I had from the old engine hoping it will fix the issue but no luck....

The car only really runs rich now with terrible fuel economy...

Can someone please help me? It would be much appreciated!

I do have some OBD2 data screen shots if you think it would help..

I had a similar issue with my m52b28. Poor fuel economy and it drove like it was a vtech engine. Would be sluggish up to 4K ish then take off. Would also pop on the overrun. Same fault code as yours. Bought a new cps from BMW and solved the problem... About 120 I think...

That is exactly what it was like but now it feels like the ECU has this ironed out, I just have the horrific fuel symptoms...

I wonder if it was my sensor but doesn't it seem strange that both my sensors are faulty. Maybe I am just unlucky.

Is the some sort of continuity test I could perform before reaching into my pocket..

Don't assume that you just have the one fault.!
I run a M52B28 in an E39, and that started exhibiting the symptoms of intermittent cam sensor failure about six weeks ago. Symptoms are no power at low revs until it reaches 4k, then takes off like a scalded cat, coupled with noticeably increased fuel consumption, similar to as described in the posts above.
In my case, I had the additional symptom that it would switch from LPG to petrol when the sensor acted up - the LPG ECU uses the cam sensor signal to determine if the engine is running or not.
Before I got around to changing the cam sensor, the engine started running even more badly. This turned out to be the MAF deciding to quit. Simple check for MAF failure is that the engine will run much better (almost normally) with the MAF unplugged.
With both these sensors replaced, the engine is back to normal again, albeit only running on petrol, since there's still no LPG available in my part of the country, as a result of recent distribution problems.
