After such along time since stripping down my engine I've forgot which main bearing cap goes where .the caps are numbered 23 x2 ,24x 2 ,25 and 26 .there is also 27 which is the thrust cap so that's not a problem .question is which other cap goes where? And what's the significance of the numbers thanks

Just striped my block. Numbered 1-5 from the front to back. 6 is the thrust no number and no number on number 7 on mine.

+1. Thrust bearing cap is self explanatory, as will be the 7th as the only 'normal' cap with no number. Make sure they go back on the right way round too. Bearing cap numbers (I.e. 1-5) on the exhaust side, the other numbers you speak of on the intake side in my case.
