Clutch and flywheel

Hi all,

I am taking delivery of an M52 engine (all ancillaries), gearbox, front half of prop next week.

I believe the M20 flywheel is a good option to have if using the M52 engine and gearbox but it requires the flywheel lightened.

Engine -----Flywheel ----Clutch ----Gearbox ----Propshaft
M52B28 ----M20 325i ---M20 325i --E36 328i ---E36 328i

the following is from the WiKi
. . . . the M20 flywheel which will need some material removing from its back . . . .

My question is; how much material and is there anywhere on here which specifically shows what is best???

Many thanks in advance

There are two bolts at the rear of the sump which will contact the flywheel if nothing is done. I think there are some pictures here but I can't seem to find them. From memory its approximately 8mm, there should still be some 'meat' on the back of the flywheel when done.

The alternative is to grind back some of the sump but then the bolts wont fit. This is what the previous owner of my first conversion did but they also ground the bolt heads which made it impossible to get a socket onto them. I replaced them with allen bolts and it all fitted with an unmodified flywheel.

I brought my 2.5 flywheel to my local engineering company and they did this

Thanks for the update, but for some reason I can't see any photobucket pictures. Just a pic saying please update your account to enable 3rd party hosting. Getting it across the site, maybe photobucket has changed?
