3.5" MAF conversion

Iv recently found that my supercharger air intake is a very important element for making power. Im using the standard 80mm (3") MAF on my 328i engine. I see in America they often do a 3.5" MAF conversion from a 540i and have proven decent results. Ill be getting a remap soon so I want to make it as efficient as possible before I hand over all that cash. Anyone try this conversion?

Theres not much space left in my bay so I might buy some aluminium bends and get a local welder to squeeze something in.

The inlet to the supercharger is already 3.5"...

Is that your car in the first picture?

If you are looking at getting it as efficient as possible, surely an intercooler is a better option than a slightly larger MAF? I wouldn't run a boosted engine without one

Funny you should say that, Iv just finished installing this water intercooler. The problem now is that the 6psi I was making before (without the intercooler) has now turned to 3-4psi. Iv ordered a smaller pulley to bring back up the boost. I wasnt expecting such a loss.

The Americans call them a "power pipe" when referring to the supercharger intake. Seems that a large bore metal induction pipe allows the supercharger to perform better, bringing up the boost a little. This is why Im looking for info on the larger MAF

Not seen one of those before. Not sure it's the best idea sitting right on top of a hot engine either. Not a fan of chargecoolers, 2 friends have written off engines due to them but that's another story.

Why don't you go MAP based and ditch the MAF altogether?

Any top mount type of intercooler isnt ideal but this was the best solution. I plan to insulate it when out on the track.


Im just running a standard ECU and plan on tuning it. Im trying to avoid going down the standalone/ wideband route for budget reasons.
