There's a readers car thread on Pistonheads somewhere re. a trackday E36. The chap built a 3 litre stroker the established way using an M54 inlet cam and some various other minor changes I can't remember off the top of my head. Spent a day on the rollers mapping it up and I think that was just shy of 250bhp...

Mine made 180bhp on the wheels at 5.4k but the vanos wasn't working. I'll take it back when I get a spare wkend

when you guys start using proper cams instead of the wussy OEM stuff you'll easily do it.

You'd make miles more on 'proper cams' as said, but it kinda defeats the object of a cheap build with OEM only parts.

Yes it did make 250hp/250lbft, and that's my thread. That was on the MS41.1 - it was never perfect and kept adapting/running rich.

Although, I'm now on standalone management, and its going for mapping next weekend. Ditched the MAF and standard lambdas. Running MAP vs TPS, I should get a bit more clean power from it, but we'll see.

Its M50 Block, M54 Crank + Pistons/Rods, M20 Flywheel + Clutch, M50/2 Head, M54 Inlet Cam, M52 Exhaust Cam, M50 Inlet, M50 Throttle Body, 328/M3 Pinktop Injectors, M52 M3 3.2 Exhaust Manifolds (Modified to go 2 into 1), with a single 2.5" system back/no cat. etc.

Hoping to reach high 6's, 7's would be nice.

Big blower will help mind

S50B30US is 240bhp which is barely more than a 3L m50/52. heaps of guys on the US easily eclipse the standard figure with bolt ons. even the s50 cams are not that big yield engines over 250bhp and can be had for cheap over there

Mapped today on standalone. Kept the VANOS engaged slightly longer (around 5000rpm) and it smoothed the top end of the curve.

262hp/259lbft.

Transformed drivability and feels much more responsive. Now to get it back out on track...

Impressive stuff, which standalone management are you using?

I'm using Adaptronic (http://www.adaptronic.com.au/)
MAF removed and now running MAP, stock lambdas removed and running wideband only. Still using standard coils etc. Here are the graphs for anyone interested:

This is with the VANOS running its stock on/off values, you can see the dip in power and torque at 4500rpm:

Disengagement point then moved to 5000rpm and the whole thing smooths out:

Some nice graphs there, plenty of torque low down to. Interesting that keeping the vanos in smooths the transition out.

Nice figures, how much did all this set you back out of interest

ECU? You're probably talking the best part of a grand to do it properly and have it mapped, including doing all the work yourself. I literally had it running and ready to map when I took it there. Granted i'm running all new sensors (water temp, air temp, crank sensor etc). Although, you have to remember an ECU and sensors can be used on any car in the future, so its not really an outright cost thats lost on a car.

How would those figures change if using cams out of a us m3?

It's a pretty tempting conversion to do

Also this is a superflow dyno that is calibrated every month and is bang on the money ,this can not be compared with a dynojet which in this cars case would be showing about 270+hp

I'm not sure with the M3 cams, I suppose the M54 inlet cam is halfway between the 328 and M3 items. I'm running standard 328 exhaust camshaft though.

I had it done and mapped here as I've used the same rollers when it was a completely stock 328, then with the M50 inlet, then with M3 headers/exhaust/flywheel + map, then 3.0 on stock ECU and then 3.0 on standalone. All makes a good comparison more than anything

F0xy, Do you build customer engines?
My e30 bodywork needs some love, so you could have the M50B25 Alpina lump to convert to M50B30 while it's been fixed, (if you do take on work?)
If not can you assist with finding parts for the build?
