Hi I was wondering if a s reg 528i would have m52 running gear or if it is a different engine?

Yep, M52. M54 was the later 2.2, 2.5 and 3.0.

All 24v standard 2.8s will be an M52 variant.

528i s reg - is this m52 running gear?
