I'm going to log my oil temps at silverstone next week to see if it is necessary. Have got an s50 housing if I need to go that way but need to decide what to do with oil cooler. Post up progress please if you go ahead!

Bit of an old thread revival but as it's relevant to this thread...
Any outcomes to the checks?

The audible outcome is M52 engines tick a lot less with an oil cooler fitted after some heavy track use

Given the cost of even a used S50 housing (£300-£350 last time I checked), the aftermarket options that allow a sandwich plate type filter cap to be screwed onto an M50 filter housing (from Rally Road and potentially Mocal now too, according to Rix) look quite cost effective.

Are they thermostat controlled though?

I fitted my s50 housing last year with a cooler in the lower grille and it has dropped temps at least 15 degrees and possibly more so well worth it, I can stay out much longer and keep temps in safer ranges

Nope - provisions must be made for an in-line thermostat which does add another £100 or so to the cost.
Is the thermostat built into the S50 oil filter housing?

Does anyone on here have any experience of this alternative to the. S50 oil filter housing?
I have got an s50 housing to fit but it looks too much hassle in comparison to the alternative. The car it is going on is a track only m52 e30.

Popular in America for obvious reasons.
I found the s50 housing to be a straight swap, I replaced the gasket out of caution and my new m52 tensioner bolted straight on too. No issues with belt alignment that I can see.
