Ews wiring help

I have done most of the wiring on my m52 but am a bit stuck when it comes to the ews I've read the sticky but it says that the violet and White wire should be live in acc, run and start how is this possible because if you join the three together it tries to start when the key is in position 2 please help I'm sure I'm missing something simple but just can't see what.

No it means the violet & white wire should stay live in accessory, ignition on & crank positions not join all three together.

The first position on the ignition switch terminal R or accessory is the wire you need to connect to, violet wire.

Ah that makes a bit more sense ok so I've done that but still nothing she's tuning over but I've got no fuel or spark also there is a conection on the front of the injector loom that I don't seem to have mate to is this right

If it cranks then the ews is recognising the key so it is more likely to be ews communication or alignment to the DME/ecu, I am sure Brian Moore will be along with a link to possible wiring mods for engine conversions.

Oh dear I've just noticed a slight mistake I connected the ews wire to pin 7 but on the wrong plug so it was wired into the ignition live is the ecu likely to be ok or have I just fried it. It is turning over regardless of were the key is, surly this isn't right.

Only applies if the starter inhibitor is wired in, which it isn't in most E30 applications. Should be able to hear a soft click from the inhibitor relay inside the EWS unit when the ignition is switched on though.

What colour wire to the spare connection on the injector loom?
I can't make out quite what you've done with the wiring, but most electronic modules are quite robust and have some kind of internal buffer on their connections, so I doubt if you've done damage.

Spare connection sorted bit of a special moment plug was hiding under some cables  .

On the wiring sticky it says to wire the ews from pin 18 at ecu through pin 7 at the engine loom plug but that applies to the e36 not e30, pin 7 on the e30 plug is Ignition switch and that's were I put it not paying enough attention, have changed it now but wasn't sure if it would have damaged the ecu and one other thing is my ews module doesn't click, it's all from the same car and was running before removed so should be ok, do they all click i read somewhere that not all of them do.

Sorry for all the simple questions

Pins 1 and 3 on the EWS module should be open circuit normally, but should go short circuit when the key chip is presented to the ring antenna, and the ignition switched to the first position.
This proves that the EWS module recognises the key, but not that the ECU recognises the EWS module.

I've wired pins 1 and 3 into into the black an yellow start wire but unfortunately still no click from ews box or power to the fuel pump. Am i missing something or am right so far thanks

Ok so my ews 2 is shagged :( I know were there is an ecu and ews the ecu has the same numbers but it's using ews 3 can I use this in place of ews 2 with out any wiring changes

Hi Dan, i had trouble getting mine going ews wise it can be a ball ache when it doesn't work when it seems it should.
firstly confirm what you have got, you now have a matching set of keys, ews module (big white one with yellow plug) and ecu plus the antennae ring and receiver that it plugs into?

when i had this issue i went through everything from scratch and checked every little bit again assuming nothing as the one little thing you don't 100% confirm will be what is wrong.

where is your antennae mounted? is it loose on the floor temporarily? this is ok for now but if it's on the ignition barrel make sure you're getting a good reading from the key/chip it should be nice and close.

the violet and white wire to the antenna module, where did you get power for this from? is it 100% a switched live? there should be no power on this wire unless the key is switched on.

is the brown wire onto a good earth point? test it for continuity with a multimeter to a good earth like the door hinge etc.

the blue wire from this goes to pin 13 of the ews module. if this is plumbed into the car do a continuity test to confirm 100% that it's reaching the box and while you're there count the pin number to confirm it's correct.

does pin 7 on the ews module have ground? test in the same way as previously suggested and also check it against the other ground in the system.

where did you get the red/yellow wires permanent live from? this should always have 12v on unless the battery is disconnected, make sure this is 100% the case.

next comes the fault i had with my system, everything else was connected up correctly as was the green wire through the c101 main engine harness plug. however i had continuity between two pins somehow on the c101 and it was preventing the ecu from receiving the correct signal and i had no spark or fuel just a crank.

to get around this i removed the backing from the ecu main harness plug and went from the green wire of pin 4 ews module directly to the pin inside the harness plug pin 18 ecu. make sure you disconnect the green wire from anywhere you currently have it first though and go direct from ews to ecu to prove it.

these steps will get your system working again assuming you only have an ews issue. on my car sometimes the ews midule takes a second or so to register and softly click (i can feel it gently popping into place). if you put your key in the barrel and hold the ews module then put it to pos 1 or two then put the e36 chip into position and wait a second or so it'll click. then try starting the car, once it's clicked you don't have to hold it in the antennae ring constantly.

let us know what happens, don't give up it's worth it honest, i've only had a glimpse of mine going properly as i have an intermittent misfire which hopefully i've found :? but when it was going right it was awesome.

hope this helps
Kev

Hi kev the antenna is on the floor at the mo all from the same car both sets I have are, I'm not sure if my original set is fooked or not now as the new set is no different :?

Violet and White wire is linked to position 1 on the ignition.

Red and yellow are permanent live from ignition.

Tested earths are both ok.

When I turn the ignition on there is about 12v traveling down the ecu to ews wire then when the key is introduced it drops to around 7ish so something is happening just not all of the right bits. This is also currently connected direct at th ecu.

I have double checked under the bonnet all those connections seem correct.
Now this might sound daft but how many body/engine earths are under the bonnet is it just the one on top the strut or have I missed some.

Cheers Dan

hi dan, can you feel the relay clicking when you put the key into the antennae ring and the key into position 2 i.e. nearly in the start position on the ignition switch.

there are a few earths in total including the main body earth off the engine block, have you got this connected?

oh by the way not on your mind right now i appreiate but if you think the ews system etc is ok and you now have two, i need a new ecu as mine is defective and obviously the key and ews stuff with it, i'll buy it off you if you want to sell it?
cheers
