E30 Zone

Any one who has used a brake servo from a clio got the part number off it.
I`ve found one off a `99 model and want to know if it would be ok before i buy it.

I've just been out to the garage and taken the following number off mine

8200 192 616

Will give you another tomorrow

Does it make any difference if the servo came of an ABS or non ABS car?
I`ve noticed on yours it says ABS on it and cooks doesnt.

Cook does your car have ABS fitted? Mine has.

My e30 doens't have ABS no. What about yours lee, did you have ABS on your touring? You seem to have the same one as roadhazard?

What part number is yours Dan and have you got ABS? ( i remeber seeing a pic from you with the E36 air box fitted,so no ABS there in that one)

Roadhazzard's has the same numbers on as mine, my touring had ABS.

My chromie does not, but that's some way off yet

ABS makes no difference to the servo, the clio has a different master cylinder for ABS cars but it makes no odds, ive used the servos on abs and non abs E30's without problems

What is the dimension of the spacer you put between the master cylinder and the servo? I haven't made one for my car yet.

It seems to vary, but no more than about 10mm seems necessary. I just used a 5mm thick piece of threaded bar that I cut down to 10mm in length and then drilled a dimple in one end so that the rod in the servo pushes into it. Just insert it into the master cylinder.

You'll know if you have too much spacer as you'll feel the resistance when you push the master cylinder onto the servo. If you can feel a fair bit of resistance before the master cylinder is mounted up then you need to lose a bit otherwise your brakes will be partially on all the time

Well that's my take on it but I'm an amateur and would invite anyone to correct me on something as important as brakes

It needs to be around 20mm long, 10mm bolt is the ideal spacer, fits perfectly

Measure the difference between the push rod on each servo to get the correct spacer length

Thanks everyone. I could have done the measurement but too bad I don't have the BMW servo with me any more.

If I use a bolt, I guess the head has to be removed? I'll try Lee's length first because his servo is the same as mine. I'm not sure about feeling resistance though. I remember last time I mounted the assembly I already felt some resistance and that was without a spacer. Odd but I'll double check.

I didn't actually need a spacer on the servo I used (numbered above), but on the first clio servo used, I did need one.

Sorry for keeping bringing this back.

What are signs that I need a spacer? Excessive pedal travel before the brake bites? Because that's what I'm having right now. The pedal stops near the floor but does not touch it. Are there any possible causes? The reservoir is filled with fluid and it's a PITA to move as I have to undo a brake pipe to get to one of the master cylinder bolts.

Ok I did some trial-and-error this weekend. I ended up with a spacer 20mm long like Dan said. The pedal travel improved a lot. It is still a little too low but that probably can be cured by some more bleeding.

This is the one i just got for £7.50 77 00416264/c dont know if it`s going to work yet.

Been trying to fit the servo today and when i come to put the pin in to join the pedal to the servo its a bit long for the hole.

Do i have to pre load it a bit or should i cut the bar i`ve put in down again?

Ive not worked with a Clio servo, but on all the others Ive used, that 'fork' from the servo can be adjusted.

Obviously, if the spacer used is too long, then that wont be helping matters. If the fork is adjustable, Id get the spacer to a length where the hole is pretty much lined up, then adjust the fork for fine tuning.

Dont think these servo are adjustable (well i cant see how)

Ah ok. Ive not used a Clio servo, so wasnt sure.

If it is, there will be a nut at the end of the fork - you can just see the brass nut at the end of the fork on the E30 servo here...



The VW servo has it also, but its hidden under the rubber cover.

The spacer length should be the same as the difference in length between the pushrod on the two servos, dont just guess as you will be wrong and the brakes wont be working as well as they could be

To get the two holes in your picture lined up, simply adjust the pull bar

I did dan, i put a rule in and difference was 45mm (which i thought was a bit long)so cut bar to that length then when i put brake master on i had to push it down hard to get the nuts on.
So i cut it down another ten mil and there was only a little resistence when re fitted.

Its never 45mm, always around 20-25mm
