Engine swap ideas

Hello people, i am currently restoring a 1990 e30 316i,an engine upgrade has always been on the cards but i dont know which engine to go for.I,d love the m50 or an m42 but funds are limited and im looking to putting the car back on the road this year for a trip to france.Id settle for a m40 b18 but it would ave to be a clean,low mileage one.An m20 b20 is not an option but the b25 m20 would be fine too,any ideas,tips or even engines for sale would be greatly apprieciated,
