I do not know if anyone put this link up but i found it interesting, for example, ultra low sulphur petrol is what we have now, so am guessing that if one has a high miller nikasil block and still going strong, with the low sulphur petrol we have one should be ok?

Or is that utter shait and most nikasils are on their way out?

I would personally say that any car with nikasil liners would have had it by now tbh!

Although interesting reading I think it is scare tactics, the average m52 would have between 60-100,000 miles, some more so on that basis would they not already be dead??.....

Its not just nikasil and high sulphur content that fcks bores, the amount of morons that run these cars about in limp mode because they are too tight to have them fixed/serviced properly means there are still a lot of shitters out there. I stripped an M52 this morning and with the amount of sludge in the head im surprised the cam bearings are still in perfect condition

I had a 97 328i with 145k on the clock, still on its original nikasil donk with no issues at all. I also have 2 328 engines in stock witch appear to be niksil engines and they both run sweet, no smoke and clean plugs! There are more of these about than the steel lined jobs i reckon.

Sorry I worded it wrong, I meant if the nikasil problem was that bad then the nikasil lined engines would all be dead by now wouldn't they..... Surely it has to be hype and as dan put it down to owners negligence?....

My engine is a warranty replacement steel liner block, of 1999 vintage. The paperwork that I kept from the donor car showed this was done when the car had 79k on the clock, car was a 1995 car. Car had 139k on the clock when i got it

So most of the problems were in the mid/late 90's when the crap fuel was out there. Granted it will have taken a few more years to weed out the corpses on stretchers, but I'd doubt many remaining nikasil block versions have these issues now and it's more scare story/urban legend than a common problem
