E30 Zone

What are people running in conversions. What should be avoided. Want to use a solid flywheel. Anybody got any bits gathering dust in garage? Also whats peoples experiences with rack conversions with the m30. I have an e46 rack with danthes pipes and linkage.will this fit?

I would recommend getting an e28 535 or m535 solid single mass flywheel. Luk or Sachs matching clutch kit.

Try the breakers on the BMW5 forum, you should get one easy enough.

e46 rack should be fine.

e28 m5 or m535 (can never remember, think it was m5) flywheel and clutch on mine, makes it quite a responsive engine for such a big lump!

e46 rack will fit, with Dan's solid bar and 2 e34 UJ's. One of the downpipes will need to be modified as well. Dan's m20 pipes fit, but you need to gently bend one of the solid pipes to get it to the right angle. Can't remember which one but it's obvious when you put it all together

It alright for daily use? I know someone selling a full conversion that has a solid flywheel but it is so light its a bit of a pain to drive slow/in traffic. It alsoa has lightweigh pistons m5 crank shrick cam and a few other bits on it so needs to be able to handle extra power. Looking to put something a bit heavier on it to make it more drivable as a daily.

Mate, the sheer torque of the lump makes driving a real pleasure, there is no problem in heavy traffic.

I'd happily drive mine as a daily (if it had an interior and proper seats lol), the flywheel is only what BMW put on themselves, it hasn't been lightened anymore so doesn't make it horrible to drive

Has your mate got a sprung clutch plate or a solid one like on the DMF? If it is a solid clutch on a solid flywheel then that could make it a pain to drive slowly or pulling away

Does the flywheel need to match clutch. Will I need the pressure plate and starter off the same vehicle too

I am unsure of the clutch in it. I would assume it is a sprung one. The clutch engages fairly smoothly. Its just the weight of flywheel that is an issue. Very little throttle and the engine picks up to high revs very quickly and because only a small amount of throttle is applied it stalls easily.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think they are interchangable, I'm sure someone will be able to say for definite. Strange why the car stalls, unless I'm pulling away quickly I just usually pull away in 2nd with a tiny bit of throttle, I have got a 3.73 diff though.
