Got a new gearbox and it is different !

It's a Getrag 262
No. 2620151000
It has a removable bell housing and apparently was off a e28 535
It also has the flat plate type of selector
I'll get some pics.
It seems good, oil inside is quite fresh and it turns nice and smoooooooth
I'm sure I have read some where that I can re-use the bell housing with other boxes?
Will get researching on the net
It was a good price so thanks to BMW MAD a top bloke and ace trader on here. Buy from him and he will make you happy
Pics up ASAP

Ok so I just had a play and this box is odd
I swear there is something wrong with the gears, it has the normal resistance going right with the knob but you can go right and down also, so it must be 3rd and 4th.
More playing needed, probably just me being stupid
Shame it doesn't have the flat plate type of selector as i can't use it like it is
Oh well,

You sure it's just got more play than it normally would as the linkage isn't slotted into the rear bush on the tranny tunnel yet?

Few pics
mullered reversing sensor

but they are the same as my spare m20b25 box
it's got a couple of sensors for the flywheel, can't remember exactly what for but I don't need them with DME1.3 anyway
shame it doesn't have the selector plate
oil is really fresh in there, it's obviously been well looked after
removable bell housing
i'll have another play in the morning

it looks like I need one of these
anyone got a spare ?
anyway, this box is off to the local garage 0800 tomorrow along with:
1. new clutch kit
2. new slave and master cylinders
and this should sort out all my problems

this is the same gearbox i am using in my e30. Plate is a perfect fit too. No need to modify.

You don't necessarily need to use a plate!
I opted for using a M3 bow on the back of the gearbox.

This gives you the option of using the later style shifting arm.
The M3 bow costs next to nothing at the dealer. Finding an appropriate shifting arm shouldn't be a problem with that box.
(I had to shorten mine quite a bit as I'm using the dogleg gearbox)

that great mate, thanks for that
I never knew that box existed so i'll get one of those also
this box I have is odd.
there is spring resistance pushing the selector right (like you would get in a normal car when going into 5th) and I can then go right and DOWN into gear ? WTF is going on there !!

yes sounds like you have got a dog leg box

Either a dogleg or you have a 6th gear.! Probably a dogleg.

Sounds like you're sitting on a genuine dogleg gearbox - which is pure gold IMHO.
Few things:
- get yourselves prepared to have someone doing some aluminum tig welding.
You won't find a shifting arm that'll fit - I found myself a M40 shifting arm (which is quite long)
and had it shortened to this:

- get a long diff.
5Th gear on a dogleg box is prise-direct (this is one perfect way to verify if you have a dogleg box anyway); which means your input shaft will be running at the same speed as your output shaft in 5th gear. On overdrive gearboxes 4th gear is prise direct.
I chose a 2.93 diff; which I still think is the perfect combo. 2.93 diffs were used on all e30 ETAs.
The long 1st gear will kick you in the butt - without having you just burning your tires; 2nd will have you just passing the 60 mph mark; and 5th will bring you a 145ish top speed.
- whatever you do; make sure you attach either the M3 bow or the shifting plate to the gearbox before you get it in the car.
Ask me how I know...

right o mate, thanks for that and I really appreciate the pic
I will mark up the input and output shafts now and do a whole revolution on them in 5th and check the output shaft markings
thanks again, i'll be in touch i'm sure
you wouldn't have the measurements of that selector shaft would you ?
cheers

Any updates on this?
I do have measurements of both shifting arm and shifting rod; you do realize those depend on your engine position?

Yer, the engine is right back in pos 3, it's almost touching the bulkhead
Thanks mate

Would be nice though

You need an Ali M3 one and rubbers

Thanks, will keep a look out

The crossmember was only €10 from the dealers here - dirt cheap imho.
Rubbers are a bit more expensive new.

I fitted the bow and a spare m20b20 linkage I had
just need to now measure up under the car the required lengths of the 2 arms. I know someone who can cut and weld it for me.
will look into those xmembers
thanks mate, most appreciate the advice

From the top of my head mine are:
Shifting arm (measured between the center of the mounting eye - and the center of the eye where the shifting stick sits): 165 mm
Shifting rod (measured between the two centers of the connecting rods): 145 mm
The rod length (of course) depends on the stick used (ask me how I know, again)
Mine is a tad long so my stick hits the center console when shifting in 2nd and 4th.
From the pics it seems like you have the smaller flange fitted on your gearbox. I would recommend using a M30 one - so you can use the larger guibo.
You'll need to shorten a driveshaft anyway...

thanks mate
it is a large one, just a rubbish pic
i'll get under the car as soon as I can and check out those measurements
not full decided if I will keep it or sell it tbh
