Syko's M30 E30

My R33 Skyline kept breaking on me so I broke it, sold it for parts and got myself an E30:

Image

And a 3.5l M30 with box:

Image

Since I'm a bit useless with a spanner I dropped it straight round my mates house, he's a member on here somewhere - dough.

Image

Stage 1 will be complete when we hear her roar into life.

Stage 2 will be nitrous.

dough begins work
Image

First job was to get the 318is engine out.
Image
Image
dough wrote: i got the old out and new sat on the mounts bank holiday monday, as you can see its very, very tight! The engine is an M30 3.5, with around 220BHP as stock, good basis for turboing, as BMW used to race these turboed back in the day!
Had to ahem reshape the slam panel slightly to allow the motor to fit, its very tight and i was working alone, i will redress this at weekend when i refit the bonnet

ImageImage
Image

here the rad is fitted, its a deep narrow rad (alpina derived), and is again a very tight fit!, had to remove the existing fan to get it in, and dress the seams back with a hammer, also the car had been towed by the front crossmember, so had to reshape it into line and dress the seams (sledge hammer job!) As you can see, i had to remove all the bumpre, spoiler and front panel to fit the rad, fan etc

Image
Image

tonight i decided to fit a fan in front of the rad for joel, to make some space and tidy the bay, its from a pajero, i extended the wires and made some mountings thus

rad
Image

fan position
Image

brackets, using captive fixings, 2mm plate steel
Image
Image

brackets bent and welded on
Image
Image

and fan in place, done this way so the fan can be rempoved without disturbing the rad if necessary and to save valuable space and weight!
Image

refitted, belted and piped the powersteering pump. Needed to nick a pipe from my car, as the pipes on the 4cyl cars come out at odd angles that wont reach
Image

Final fitted the rad, fan and wiring, horn relocated, but i may move it elsewhere as i dont like it obscuring the top of the rad where it needs the most cool air, 6 cyl e30s usually have twin horns under the wheelarches, so may move it there, but will move easily if there is a problem
Image
Image

And finally made ad fitted all the rad hoses, the elbow was supplied wit the car and has a tee piece that goes to the heater
Image
Image

refitted the bonnet, and it actually closes!
Image

refitted the front panel, including a clearance hole for the new fan (will be invisible behind the bumper)
Image

Image

This side of the engine and bay are now complete, fuel and return pipes fitted, header tank brackets made, painted and fitted, heater hoses made and fitted, rad filled and part bled. Made a throttle cable adapter to use the stock cable, fitted the harness shielding at the bulkhead top, and reharnessed the wiring, which is now all in place, just needs tywrapping into place

Image

red wires in the above pic are power and switch feed to the fan relay that i tucked out of sight behind the front panel, they will be harnessed into the main loom once routed and trimmed to length

throttle cable bracket

Image

header tank
Image

maf fitted and wiring covers all done
Image

wiring routed, relays nowmounted in the car out of sight
Image
Image

so really waiting for exhaust parts now, will do a few fiddly bits in the week, spent all morning flipping the steering linkage to try and get the stock manifold to fit, which it almost does, bu i cant grind much more away, so going to fit the e34 ones that definately fit with good clearance!
That's where it's at so far. Doug tells me the downpipes just landed and I ordered the exhaust manifolds and prop today so we're not far off hearing her fire up :)

Yeah, it's gonna be a track car so I've no intentions of making it pretty. Lively maybe, but not a show car.
zaust wrote:What nos set up are you planning for it ?
I got a kit off a mate who does some Pro level drifting. Doug tells me it's a good kit and he'll hook it up in half a day once I'm happy the engines solid etc.. I think he said it has 3 jets? Like I said I'm not a spanner man. I just know it's got a 24lb bottle!

lol, step at a time!

Got to get her running yet, take her up the dragstrip see what sort of times she'll do, then once I'm happy nothings gonna go pop we'll start thinking about the nitrous :)

3 jets will be a 2 stage. Nitrous doesn't pop things miss use and a bad set up do. Just keep an eye on the plugs. Keep us posted on the progress.

Dougs the man when it comes to nitrous. He's got a V8 mk1 Capri running NOS and a 325i which he's putting NOS in. He'll suss it ;)

You remembered your password I see!

Just ordered the gaskets, should land tomorrow/Thursday at the latest.

Still need this piece of hose though if anyone can point me in the right direction?

Should be about £18 quid. Call Cotswold BMW parts and tell 'em your an e30zone member, they deliver and give you discount. :)

We'll do a vid once the exhaust is on, it's terrifying the neighbours at the moment! lol

What oil should we be putting in the M30? We've just chucked in some that I used for the old Skyline for now but will give it a oil and filter change the weekend

Bit of a crappy evening, took a long time to mod the studs on the exh manifold flanges, then had to re cut and shut the downpipes to centre the outlet, however exhaust will be done tomorrow for sure!

Got the prop off and measured, gear linkage on, and have to say the box is beautiful, notchy and tight, very short throw too

Cheers :D

right, short update as the two vids upload

first the pics are of the new modded downpipes, excuse my scabby welding, the pipes were reasonably thin so took some welding!

I have used the old Y piece out of the 318IS downpipe, used this to siamese the pipes, and of course, cut and shut the pipes to centre them, please note the strengtheners between the pipes were to stop them moving when i cut them up!

Image

Image

Image

Image

the flange on the rear, mates to the scorpion backbox

will upload the you tube links once the vids have uploaded, when i do, the blowing at the front is due to no gaskets being fitted between the head and manifolds, as joel hadnt dropped those off yet! (has now!)

will be all done by next weekend

cheers :D

first vid, ten scott mills points for spotting why its hunting profusely!

second to follow!

by the way, the e30 in the exhaust pics is mine, its waiting until i finish this one to be sprayed!

2nd vid, running a tad better due to a minor change!

engine is very sweet, no knocks, rattles, exhaust manifoldis blowing, due to not having fitted the gaskets yet, but the exhaust will have to be stripped to fit the prop, so will fit them then! oil light goes off when cranking on the starter motor.

will be finished by end of next week, assuming the prop doesnt take long

:D

I'm guessing because you didn't have the idle control valve fitted, and there appears to be a leak in the exhaust.
