535 fly won't fit the M10 gearbox, iirc, it's too large in diameter

Not sure M10 gearbox will fit over the E28 clutch/fly.

crikey mate that was quick - ok thanks, just trying to work out what combo's would fit but keep coming back to your advice on the M10 route. There is an M10 engine and box on e bay at the moment which would give me all i need except the beefed up clutch that (sorry can't remember the blokes user name now!! nice chap but forgot his name !! LOL ) used.

I dont know the guy in the ebay link but have you tried sourcing an M30 gearbox from a 525i 528i E28, or E34 530i?

The actual flywheel diameter is the same, but the clutch friction area is bigger on the M30 fly and therefore the clutch is bigger. Since the M10 gearbox clears the same diameter flywheel there maybe a chance than you could squeeze in a single mass M30 flywheel and clutch, unless the bell housing tapers inwards too soon and they won't fit. What release bearing you would use I have no idea! This is all theory, so someone might come along and tell me I'm totally wrong! If you had all the different bits it might be worth a try, but if you don't I'd stick to known methods.
If my M10 box/fly/paddle clutch doesn't work out I will investigate this...

yer, i'll go with that advise and stick to the M10 method with the decent clutch kit that rob0r bought. Rob0r - did your clutch kit include everything e.g clutch plate, cover plate and release bearing ? thanks

Yes it did, all three bits. I've been driving the car for a few weeks with the clutch now and it seems ok so far. I haven't been giving it a hard time as I'm trying to break it in gently. That's not to say I haven't done the odd drift and wheelspin and it's held up fine.
One thing I will say is the biting point is very high up and being a paddle clutch it is less forgiving than a standard clutch it does catch me out at junctions, I tend to over rev it by mistake. But that's not much of a concern to me and it's easily livable, I'm just not used to it yet.
I'd rather go out and give this clutch a proper beating at a drift day before I give a proper thumbs up to anyone else though.

Why dont you use the m30 box? Then there are no issues.

M30 manual boxes are getting rare nowadays.

exactly Lee they are quite rare now and people are asking £££ for them, also M10 boxes are a bit lighter which offsets the weight of the M30 lump a bit, that said, if i could find an M30 box in good condition for say £75-£100 i'd probably get it.....

why don't you pay the extra for the proper gearbox etc for the m30 engine, surely the m10 gearbox is sub-standard for this motor?
it may save you time and money in the long run if it fails

M10 gearboxes can take some serious stick, its the clutch thats not up to it.
