Pretty sure someone on here has a Viscous fan with the Engine in P3.
Good read though Marc

I have seen a conversion where the vicous fan has been used so it is do-able....
I might try it on mine

I know for sure there is one on here but it was done with a brake servo change and a massarge of the gearbox tunnel, And i belive it had a e34 rad too (may be wrong).
But this guy has gone a*s about tit and is going to have problem after problem now hes sitting the engine lower. I can't belive he has notched the sub frame too. I think the next biggest problem will occour wiht the sterring colom as it is a left hooker.
Even the prop bearing will get mashed up every few k and the coupling will need constant swapping. Geometry will be messed up, but I guess if it is just to look at and not drive, it will be fine..

Too right, i think the fact it looks like he's made his own mounts, used shit poly engine mounts have mad his engine sit the height it is now, causing bonnet problems, but he just ain't listening
I've never heard of anyone "notching" the subframe

Ah, missed the "homemade mounts part.

I wish you hadn't have posted this here... I like how on the zone everyone is helpful and respectful of each other so I usually post here instead of R3V. Hopefully this doesn't give you the reputation R3V has given me...
Everyone will see the finished result once it's finished within the next couple weeks. There really isn't as big of a problem as everyone is trying to believe there is.
Hartge used a clutch fan on the H35, instead of notching the subframe they used a custom oil pan.

That's alot of ballache just to get a viscous on Andrew, up to you though, but i couldn't be bothered as the electric fans do their job well.

Mate it's a forum full of people that have the same intrest and you will be unlikley to ever meet anyway, so take it with a pinch of salt.
But personllay I would stop what you are doing conversion wise and look through all the build thread's and copy what is proven to work. There is at least one conversion I have seen on here that has the viscous fan in place, so it can be done. However there is and alway's will be a difference in thing's like pipe's, loom's, rad's and fan's ect, but that is the pesonal bit/bit's. The basic's need to be the same (proven right way's). Prepare and then let your imagination take over.
(or atleast buy a scrapper for $50 to try it out your way in before wrecking your motor.)

+1.
Why the facination of the viscous??
I know it has been done, and i've seen one on a Zoners Hartge m30b28 on here, but you have to sacrafice alot of the firewall, plus no doubt , move the brake bar mechanism too, as I know that is only mm's from the firewall itself.

I don't doubt an electric fan works flawlessly for you, but then again look at the change in climate. You won't be driving up and down Pacific Coast Highway in Southern California on a hot Summers day with temperatures up in the 90s.
And I think the brake bar thing you're talking about is only with RHD e30's, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember reading somewhere about it. And despite what you've seen from other position 3 M30s who have beat the firewall to death, I've
barely modified the firewall and it's fitting perfectly with the clutch fan sitting about an 1 and an 8th inch away from the stock e28 radiator. In the process of making custom motor mounts now. The reason for the polyurethane rubber mounts is for minimal engine movement. I saw somebody commented on the "shit poly mounts", is there any downsides to having them?[/u]

Ive tried moving the engine further back than pos 3, its possible but you 'will' have to bash places on the fire wall, near the head and where the exhaust flange sits and then you got the sump touching, also my gearbox got a bit lodged on something in the tunnel, clutch slave maybe but i sacked the idea and gave up
Its all about moving the rad forward, or maybe custom rad made to fit in the hole under the slam panel, there's a pic on here with this done i think the engine was bright green
But then you will have the problem of stopping the fan blades hitting the bonnet, maybe trim one down?
It has been done and one guy posted in the M30 sticky showing how its done, i remember Rav posted a youtube link ages ago with a guy with a viscous
Electric FTW but i do love the roar of a viscous and with an M30 it would sound savage
