I'm changing the oil in my e30 335i and was looking tips on replacing the sump gasket as I've a small leak. I've read so many different techniques in changing it, with loosening engine mounts etc. If any of yous have done it before or has a reliable wiki give me some help please so I'm not going in blind.

Hello Black_Op_88
have googled every where, only thing I could find doesn't apply to e30 m30 engine car, but simular, this guy undid the engine mounts and lifted the engine up supported by an engine hoist, lowered the sump, removed the old gasket, cleaned the surfaces, put a cut in the new gasket to go around oil pump/pick up, slipped her in place, used like permatex sealant on all surfaces, paying extra attention to where the join is, buttoned her up, he claims it worked for him.

I'm in the middle of the sump gasket change at the minute and I don't see it possible to take the sump completely out. Something inside the engine is stopping me from sliding the sump out the front

And the cross member and stearing rack would have to come out to drop it straight down and out

So I've gotten it down enough to clean away the old burnt out gasket and I'll get the new one slid in place

Why didn't I put on a new gasket during the conversion. Such a face Palm moment.

That would be your oil pickup stopping you I would guess, but if you thinking on using any sort of sealant on your sump be warned that if you will apply to much of it and it will get squeezed out out of the edge then it might get sucked in into your oil pickup the horror story is round the corner.

Bought Honda type r for my self and that's exactly what previous owner did to it, it clogged sleeve bearing and spun it now engine is gone :(

Use permatex aviation, doesn't harden, will mix with the oil and go out with you next oil change, when you get it you'll see what I mean, I have used this stuff for 20 yrs plus and never a problem

So it turns into liquid when in oil? And then it still seals the gasket?

Correct, it goes to a tar like state, doesn't harden, when it gets in the hot oil it thins out and mixes in, then goes out in the next oil change. If it didn't work well, we would have aircraft dropping out of the sky everywhere. As I said earlier, I have used this for over 20 yrs and not just on an engine or 2, I was a partner in a performance engine reco business, we used it on every paper gasket we fitted. It's reasonably priced and if you get some, you'll see how it works, I highly recommend it and I'll be using it on my m50b28 build, cheers.
