When I bought my car a year or so ago, it came with the hard work on the M30 already done. Washer bottle, coil and nasty cone K&N as in the picture below.

Image

I have finally got around to trying to replace the K&N with a more OEM looking, and more effective airbox. So, I borrowed the airbox from my E32 735i and tried a test fit. Damn it is very, very tight in there

Image

I think it would just about go in there with a bit of custom bracketry and mounting it off straight, but I cannot see there will be any room for the coil and washer bottle. Ideally, it needs an airbox about 2" shorter, but I am not sure what BMW would sport such an airbox.

Can anyone explain how they have made it all fit in theirs?

Many thanks,

Martin.

IIRC, Rav and others have used a washer bottle from the E34 :) Fits perfect

i have the same air filter, the coil is on the clutch reservoir bracket and the washer bottle is from a vitara (from memory), mounted on the M20 AFM bracket on the other side of the bay.

when i did mine about 4 years ago, nobody (me included) had twigged that the E34 washer bottle fitted.

Oh, the airbox doesn't need mounting really, it just wedges there nicely. trim a section off the headlight backing plate trim jobbie and poke the cold air feed pipe through it.
just watch your HT leads don't chafe through on the heat shield on the airbox, took a few years but one of mine managed it.

I have not yet bothered to fit a washer bottle, I think it's about time I did though.

Thanks guys, very helpful. Looks like the E34 washer bottle saves a lob of fabrication.

I think my engine must be further forward than Ziggy's however, my E32 airbox simply won't fit in that space parallel to the rocker cover. I'd have to relocate the AFM assembly rearward to get it to fit I think.

I had an epiphany last night, and thought I wonder how Alpina did it with the B6 and B6S. Not the greatest picture below, but does anyone recognise this airbox as from another OEM BMW?

I just found that bottle in a scrap yard - but I wouldn't be surprised if it was almost the same price as getting one new from BMW; they tend to be very reasonable for that sort of thing.

My engine is in 'P3' on the .de mounts - it didn't require anything doing to the firewall to get it to sit there, so depending on your prop / mounts it might be possible to shift yours back a bit? Would obviously be good for weight distribution & rad clearance too!

That looks like an E28 airbox to me.

I used the washer bottle from an E30 324td which is still availible from BMW and was about £10!!! It sits in the engine bay battery well but you've got ECU's there.

I've seen washer bottle kits on ebay designed for kit cars that come with the pump/bottle etc and hold around 1.5lt so are ideal for cramped engine bays and costs around £10.

Not the best photo and it looks a bit od bit it is bolted down correctly and has twin pumps for intensive wash. Incidently you can see where my coil is..

Do you happen to know what that washer bottle is from? I bought an E34 bottle but it is too tall to fit. I notice yours says 2.5l on the mounting tab, mine says 3.2l so wondering where yours is from?

Cheers,

Martin

Same bottle on all E34's.
Look at the bottom of the bottom, you'll see a large lug, cut it off, but be careful not to cut it too much as the bottle will leak.
It will then sit like Ziggys' and mine.

Rav, they're clearly not the same though, are they.

Martin, it looks to me like the difference is the 'bulge' in your tank which sits directly behind the headlamp in the pic of it sat in your car (for the intensive wash tank to fit to I think). Without that, it would be able to sit further forward & the very front bit would drop down below the lights. You may need to remove a bit as Rav said though - although I don't remember having to do that myself!

As for what car mine was out of, I have no idea - it was just a car in a scrapyard & my memory isn't that good!
But according to realoem, a 2.5L tank was fitted to various cars...

eg: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... fg=45&hl=2

I'd guess a later low spec car (as you don't want intensive wash) would be where I'd start looking - pre 04/91 cars seem to have a 3.2L tank where not fitted with intensive wash.

Cheers Ziggy,

Just what I needed. I'll go hunting for a 518/520 E34 and see if I can source the 2.5l container. Failing that, I'll attack the one I already have like Rav suggested.

Martin.

Thanks for taking the time to share photos Rav. The plot thickens though, your bottle says 3.5l on it and mine says 3.2.
