The oil cooler I got with my m20 has seen much better days, is there any way to run a universal oil cooler using the existing pipe work or connections on the engine?

Don't see why nut, as long as you can get hoses/adaptors to fit, BUT, unless you are using this car for serious competition/track work, then the cooler isn't needed with modern oils. Removing the thermostat/take off block, and replacing it with the M20B20 filter fitting (a simple double ended nipple) is the simplest solution, enables more complete oil changes, and eliminates the possibility of oil leaks from a vulnerable oil cooler.

Do as Brian suggests with the M20B20 filter fitting and just leave the oil cooler in place but not connected. Best of both

I used a universal 9row on mine.
Using the original 90° fittings on the filter housing , cut the old hose off, use socketless hose with a jubilee
