E30 Zone

Hi there,
I'm new to the forum and have recently acquired a 325 e30.
I was just curious as to what modifications can be done to the standard engine to improve power, without forced induction.
I am mechanically competant and have spent most of my time previosuly playing with vw's but i don't fancy messing with turbos and superchargers.
If there isn't much potential from the 2.5 what engine conversions would be the best to achieve decent power?
Around the 200bhp mark or slightly over preferably.

The easiest and quickest way to a bit more poke is to fit a chip, which is an easy plug & play DIY job:

An M20 2.8L stroker will get you past the 200bhp mark fairly easily.

as with all engines the sky's the limit.

Yes, I fitted one of the first generation ones to a 1988 325iSE, over 6 years ago , and was impressed with it; it gave very good throttle response, so you could for the most part waft along on a very light throttle, which made for easy 30+ mpg average fuel consumption. It also seemed to lose alot of the 'kangarooing' in traffic that many E30s are prone to, making it a refined drive.

ask hongkongfuey whats done to his 2.5, hes running an airflow meter and injectors from an M30 with a chip i did for him some time ago and his put out 191bhp and 189lb/ft. think hes got a cam of some sort in there and also a full exhaust. his is that close id love to be able to tune the car in the flesh on a dyno.. would nearly bet i could get his to crack 200bhp.

miller MAF works but loads of people have problems trying to get it set right on anything other than a near standard engine. MAF will sharpen up response but the bulk of the gains miller claim with their MAF is not from the MAF but rather from the tuned chip they supply to run it. assuming you had wo E30's with identical tuning but one with a MAF and the other without there would not be all that much of a difference between the two though MAF is newer tech and more accurate as well as less restrictive buuuuuuuuut seems to suffer from gremlins that need to be rectified by tuning or messing around with the setup.
