My mate is doing his 88 cab 2ltr to 2.5 ltr engine swap and has a brown cable at pin 20(body loom side)which i have heard could become a problem?
The 2.5 he is installing is out of an f plate auto cab, could this be an issue?..thanks

Edit.....This has been sorted now...

Right, engine is in but now have no spark, there is no power at the ecu(i think),should there be power at pin 87 of this main relay to power the ecu when ignition is switched on?
Image

Also this is the ecu...which pin should be powered up with ignition on?

I should add that there is a white plug with three cables going into it above the ecu, white, green and a black, have these any significance?they are not plugged into anything?

It's odd that an F-reg car would have an 073 ECU, as these were only fitted to pre-facelift cars (i.e., D-reg or earlier). :?

Most F-reg 325i's have the later 173 or 380 ECU.

Are you sure it's the ECU supplied with the engine he's fitting?

There are fundamental differences - the 073 ECU uses two crank position sensors, one fitted to the flywheel, whereas the 173/380 just has the one CPS. The number of pins to the ECU differ also - later ones have 55 pins, arranged in 3 rows, while the 073 has 2 rows of 35 pins.

To be fair mate,i found out today the engine is an e plate 88,the ecu that came off the 2.0 had 3 rows of pins, now this ecu has 2 rows of pins,so the mechanic thats doing the work had to swap the ecu loom?....i hope that makes sense?.

Well, be sure to let the mechanic know that the earlier 073 ECU requires two CPS, fitted to the flywheel:

It would have been better to stick with the original 55-pin Motronic 1.3 loom and fit the later and better 173/380 ECU!

Right,so am i right in thinking that he could have just swapped the 2.0 ltr ecu fir a 2.5 one with the three rows of pins?....

Just scrap it. Only playing. The 3 pin plug wires are no1. Instrument panel signal, (fuel gauge). No2. Teach signal. No. Ingition switch signal (to motronic).

No need even for that; just use the 320i ECU and fit a 325i chip in it. They are identical apart from the EPROM chip!

Would different eprom chip make any sort of difference to the way it runs

Do you mean him leaving in the 2.0ltr chip on the 2.5 engine?

no. If he put the 320 ecu bac on and put the 325 chip in it would it run any different because of the rom chip difference. And have to swap the loom back over

I post them First Class, so it should reach you in a day or two.

Putting a 325i chip in a 320i ECU will make it run exactly as if a 325i ECU were fitted, unless you put one of my upgrade chips in, of course. winkeye
