Rough 325i 160k Worth ECU/other upgrade?

Hello all, my partner has a '89 325iSE 4dr. It's done about 160k miles. Currently it is not road legal but trailered to drift/track days. It's a bit rough looking but runs OK and pulls well. Love the sound of the 6pot!!

It has however recently acquired a lumpy idle. Due to the limited use of the car i'm not looking to spend big money or start stripping the block down. It's a standard engine but I was thinking is it worth spending a few quid in a couple areas for increased performance. MPG doesnt matter but a bit more low end power would be good.

I've given it a water/oil change, (it doesnt use any or mix it) new plugs, cleaned MAF (was caked in hairy oil!), new air filter. It still needs an exhaust (standard mild steel system has many holes). I was looking at a standard exhaust a few months ago but I dont mind a cheap stainless system if it's worth the extra. Also ECU chips? Is it worth it, considering it is in effect a standard engine that 'might' get a SS system but no more love. I dont plan to change cams or anything as it really is a bottom of the priority list to have any serious money spent on it at the moment.

An thoughts? As mentioned, the car does maybe 400miles a year, solely hard driving. It's OK at the moment, but just some power lower down the rev range would be nice.

Thanks.
