Looking to know if I can run a turbo on my engine with its current setup? The turbo in question is a Garrett T3.
Compression 10:2:1
overbored 325i block, 2755cc
Karl Schmidt Pistons (oversized 0.5mm)
Corrillo Con Rods
ARP Head Bolts
Knift Edged Crank
Alu sump modified for oil surge calming
Head Ported/ 5 angle valve seats and Large valves
Kent Cam 284
Rev limit ->7600rpm Chipped
SS 6 branch/custom SS exhaust
325 Sport gearbox
Open diff currently
Any info or links would be appreciated.
Cheers
Paul

Ant @ Atech is the only person I'd trust to do this tbh. Worth an email (Don't call, he is mega busy so email would help him no end)

Your not going far on that compression with pump fuel.
It´s definitely possible with race fuel.
Otherwise your faced with lowering the compression

to be honest mate im pondering at the thought currently, dont think i would want to hassle the man unless i know i was going to take it on.. more or less in the advice stage.. turbo and manifold fell into my hands so had to enquire

I thought as much, wats the pros and cons of race fuel?
its working out obviously which is going to be more beneficial long term.
hate the thought of having to alter the bottom end

Your going to be limited on power / boost with a certain amount of compression and normal fuel
How far you can stretch that on high compression and race fuel is only to be tested as engines really are very different.
You can run something like 6-10psi on that high of a compression yielding probably something around 300-330hp or so due to the cam and compression working together.
Lower the compression and your in the 500-600+ category.
There are alot of ways for you to run turbo right now and one would be race fuel or water/methanol injection on top of pump fuel.

I'm more interested into how +0.5mm pistons give 2755cc? By my maths its 2524cc unless you've also stroked the engine too.

He must have an 81mm crank. What does knife edged mean?

Shittin hell... thats quite a power gain..
Im going to give it another month or so before commiting myself too it, once i start there is no going back..
Ill do a bit of readin on the Water/Meth idea, cheers mate

Sorry I cant answer that, I bought the car/engine complete
im hoping when I get round to contacting this Les Stannard man he will give me the rundown, I dont know enough about the engine.. I assume the crank was changed as everything was new apart from the block its self..

I dont know what size the crank is.. Knife edged explained below
Knife-edging is a process that a machine shop will do to a crank that will basically remove a lot of material from the crank counterweights, which are the large cast portions of the crank that connect the main bearing journals to the rod bearing journals. The machinist will remove the material at an angle and the result looks similar to a knife's edge, hence the term. The overall result is the crank has less weight, so it will spin faster easier (but also lose revs faster) and the 'knife-edge' will also cut through the air and oil easier, in effect reducing the parasitic drag from these variables. This is a old-school racer technique and it works, but the overall gain of this is realively small, its mostly to help the engine rev faster and there are other mods that are necessary to use the gains from this mod: lighter flywheel, cams, higher rev limiter

Due to your cam setup you must stay away from backpressure (small turbines)
So post up your goals and we can have a discussion about what you need to purchase.

Well, just got back from the rollers at Janspeed, only managed 171bhp and 175 torque
Im a bit dissapointed with the result but happy at the same time that it didnt go pop, saw a bit of smoke on the run down and panicked, let a yelp out of me LOL!
Anyways all the more reason for the turbo now..
Im not sure how far I want to go power wise, anything around the 300 mark would keep me happy
Suggestions as to what I do next? Lower compression or chance it with a big turbo/low boost??
Please advise

300hp should be doable with that compression as your only going to need little boost.
Was that supposed to be wheel hp you got or flywheel?
With lower compression pistons your actually looking to make whatever powerlevel you fancy tbh.
And when you run your 9-10psi to get 300hp you´ll soon want more. So you might as well figure that in. Would be a waste of a great engine to just run 300hp

Yeah that was at the wheels mate, he said add 20% for flywheel
He did the test in 4th also which was previously reccommended.. Im still a bit miffed as to how it lost 20hp between 2 rolling roads, surely there should be a set resistance on the rollers?
I picked up one of my perspective turbos, its a Garrett T0329 do you think this will work, if its too small I can get one off an alero bus for free, will get make and model numbers off it tomorrow
Any info on pistons/rods for lowering compression? suggestions for makes? performance vs price I suppose...

When you post turbo info inducer and exducer are the best indicators of potential performance.
20% is a bit high, and never concern yourself with comparing dyno outputs.
check out e30tech.com forum for some piston info.
