One issue to the next for me. I have a video of a particularly loud and strange noise coming directly from the oil pan / bottom of the block on my M20B25, but it is loudest around the Oil Pan when under the car.

It occurs after 1.5k RPM specifically, and am unsure for how much further up the RPM Range. I've got the car booked into Eurorec next week for a checkup on some particularly annoying sounds including this one, but I'd like to go into this with some more information as to what the f**k is going on.

You'll hear it kick in at 4 Seconds into the video and drop out at 13 when closing the throttle.
Fresh oil change using 5W-40 Penrite just 3 days ago.

Some Background
- Just swapped the engine in to replace M20B20
- New Timing belt / Tensioner, Water pump, sound not coming from under timing covers - have checked with home stethoscope jobbie
- New Plugs, leads, 5w-40 oil / filter, new belts all round, most general maintenance
- Not from the accessories ie Alternator or Power steering - No AC
- Not coming from the fan, intake or under the valve cover
- Previous engine owner said he replaced the oil pan gasket as it was previously weeping, perhaps he didn't bolt the pump or other gear up correctly when replacing? - However there is no running, idle or power issues that would be related to oil or pressure loss, still drives like a dream and is much more powerful than my previous engine.

Cheers for any help.

the car is newish to me,have driven it for 700 miles so far with no change to this noise.
it doesnt sound like anything terminal at this stage really, more annoying than anything.

I would use at least 15w40, certainly made my lump a lot quieter, others recommend 20w40 also, bit heavy for Northern Europe I think.

Just a thought,

Paul :-)

I've run my E30s on 10W-40 fully synthetic for many, many years without hearing any strange noises that I'm aware of. IIRC, I had to change the grade on one of my M40s to shut the tappets up.

it's a strange noise that i still can't fathom, but at least it's not getting any worse.

there are several videos on u-tube of m20 engines with the same problem, but no one has posted any guesses as to what the cause may be.

one thing iv'e noticed is that the noise isn't there when the engine is cold-it only comes in after the engine has run for several minutes.

sounds like some sort of gear-wheel just contacting some sort of large ally casting, but ive had the timing-covers off an nothing seems out of place. :x
