So I've been driving my car for about a year and a half. I love it. Its a 1989 325i SE.
So far its body has been restored and painted, fixed a few age related niggles, put some Ronal LS wheels on it with some Bridgestone Potenza rubber and now im currently fitting Koni shocks with H&R sport springs.

You might think why does that matter with my question.. the thing is although i have made modifications to the car, they have been subtle, i have brought original dealership stickers and number plates, all in the interest of helping the car keep its original intended feel whilst still giving me a bit more that i ask for. I could have easily brought more expensive coil-over kit for the car but that for me would have detracted from the OEM feel.

So im now looking at giving myself a little more grunt, id like to pick some more torque possibly and the car feels a little short changed at 6k, so possibly more power across the curve.
my issues are this though...
Reliability is number 1
It is my daily driver (by choice, they were made to be driven)
It would be nice to keep it original looking
i don't really want to be going to the limits of what the M20 is capable of.
If i made 200/ 210hp but picked up torque and power across the curve i would be happy.

So what i think i know;
Im going to want a BBTB
a new Manifold, (do i need to change the whole exhaust?)
im going to need a cam? (something that wont ruin idle)
Can i use a chip like speed touch? or should i look at megasquirt?
Is the 2.8 build in my best interests?
some friends (none e30ers but car enthusiasts) just say be done with it and either turbo or M50.. id rather Turbo than M50 because i like the idea of doing the best with what BMW provided at the time.
ive heard that 2.7 build don't rev as high and something not to appealing about the crank??
I have done lots of reading and snooping but i just wanted to this to enter into a discussion, its easy to get carried away saying, build a 3.1 ITB machine, or stick a garret on it and go choo choo but i just want more poke for a daily and i'd like to retain the original feel of the e30. I hope all of this makes sense and someone is willing to help :)
I'll thank you kindly in advance for any help or for just entering the conversation.
I have tried to cover as much as possible to best explain my point of view and what i am trying to achieve with the car.
